Services "enabled at boot but, not running"

Posted: Mon Feb 10, 2025 4:06 am

I first noticed this when suddenly I could not browse my PC from android devices, turns out after each boot I have to manually turn on smbd.

Then I noticed the same was true for more than 40 services (as seen in Service Manager).... what changed in the last few weeks or so? Kernel related? Only thing I changed on the hardware side was changing my GPU from nvidia to AMD. Had a hell of a time getting X11 to actually work again and removed all nvidia drivers etc.

Is there an efficient fix or do I have to manually add them as is necessary to startup?

Have you tried booting with systemd and see if that makes a difference?

Did that now and the results are strange.

Under a sytemd boot smbd is running and Service Manager reports

Code: Select all

204 total services, 48 currently running | 111 enabled at boot, but not running
Under sysvinit smbd is not running and Service Manager reports

Code: Select all

80 total services, 25 currently running | 45 enabled at boot, but not running
I don't know how much the disparity actually means, I also noticed that anydesk (which I rarely use so did not notice sooner) also is not running at boot anymore. What would cause a service to stop running at boot this way?

A thought, is there something making these services "going to sleep" or is there something preventing them from starting up? A power saving issue perhaps?

Also I have noticed now that I look anydesk not running at startup but after a while popping up (don't know what the delay is) in the system tray.... probably unrelated since it actually DOES start up eventually.

I have not seen this be an issue, but your root partition is getting full and you might want to clean it out a bit.

And is that Toshiba HD from 2021? (Any HD that is older than 4 years is suspect in my mind and yours may very well be there.)

does service manager say smbd is enabled at boot time?

it is possible to be enabled under systemd and not under sysVinit, and vice versa.

Could it be some kind of safe mode, like a lower runlevel with limited processes? Another thing I can think of is you deleted a lot of the binaries when you removed nvidia related stuff so systemd or sysv init can't find the services to run

Yeah I noticed that.... I rate 10GB is about enough for now.... I could always resize it but don't wanna deal with potential booting issues from moving /home up right now.... will do either that or a complete re-install when the the DB13 base MX arrives.

hahahah two of my other HDD's (seagate) are at least 10 years old and still trucking, never had one's as reliable as this before.... I think the large fans in my chassis directly cooling them helps a lot. I use HDD sentinel to check up on their health now and then. I also weekly backup everything important on one to a second HDD because I have had as many just fail on me as other have.... they back each other up that way.

yep
it is possible to be enabled under systemd and not under sysVinit, and vice versa.
Odd though because it never used to not be enabled.

If that is so.... how would I rectify it?

Would that not prevent it from running at all though? And why would nvidia packages affect something like samba?

so lets try manually enabling smbd under sysVinit

assuming the init scripts are unmodified.

Code: Select all

sudo update-rc.d smbd remove
sudo update-rc.d nmbd remove

sudo update-rc.d smbd defaults
sudo update-rc.d nmbd defaults
and reboot

snip
did that now, have not rebooted yet, the same error happened every time I did one of the four commands and might be relevant

Code: Select all

insserv: warning: could not find all dependencies for $dbus
insserv: warning: could not find all dependencies for $dbus
EDIT: rebooted, no change, still enabled at boot but not actually enabled until I do so manually

ok so not starting because a dbus depend is missing?

that's a weird one, dbus is sort of important. do you have dbus disabled? (i'm not sure a modern desktop will run without it).

maybe we should check the init scripts

Code: Select all

cat /etc/dbus /etc/init.d/smbd /etc/init.d/nmbd cat /etc/init.d/.depend.start /etc/init.d/.depend.boot
