Problem with newer kernels and Radeon 880M

#1 Post by kohlhaas »

The latest kernel my system is running with is version 6.12.6-1-liquorix-amd64.
When I install newer kernels, no graphical user interface is started in the boot process and I end up logging into the terminal.
This is probably due to my relatively new hardware (AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX370 with integrated Radeon 890M).

I have cloned my MX-Linux-System-SSD and booted on an old Mac-Mini (with Intel processor).
This works with all kernels without any problems (of course much slower).

A question for those who know a lot more than I do: What can I do?
I would be grateful for any answer.

I suspect that your computer is in the "too new for Debian" trap and that you will have to wait until MX catches up. Linux generally lags about six months to a year behind Windows in hardware compatibility. For instance, I bought my HP 15 in Feb 2023 (its bios dates from Oct 22) and it wasn't until Apr 2023 when the Liquorix kernels became available in MXPI that that I got correct functionality. In the interim and because you need a working machine, you might give a more cutting edge distro like Manjaro a shot or return to Win 11 (I know, I know, but it's somewhat better than nothing).
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

So, it's working OK with the 6.12 Liquorix kernel shown, but newer ones have problems?

Is that just Liquorix, or have you tried a backported Debian kernel in AHS? I did 6.12.12 recently for AHS.

His profile puts him in Germany and I suspect that "newer" in this case was a translation error.

It's just that the QSI shows that there is a functioning GPU, and I'd assume they have a GUI in order to provide that QSI.

Thank you very much for the reactions so far.

To make it very clear:
Boot with kernel 6.12.6-1 works, boot with kernels 6.12.8-1, 6.12.10-1, 6.12.11-2, 6.12.12-1, 6.12.12-2 does not work.
All of course the liquorix kernels, no test package sources or backports.

I would have rather expected that with my relatively new hardware there would have been problems from the start, but the opposite is the case. Mysterious.
And of course ‘880M’ in the headline is a typo, I meant ‘890M’.

Hi Guys,
i am new to this forum and got interested in this topic because unfortunately my new thinkpad P14s AMD Gen6 lacks R890M gpu acceleration with MX Linux.
First i wanna thank all the guys actively supporting MX Linux for their work.
I was able to make my permanent move from windows to Linux because of your great efforts, THX Guys!

Currently my system only supports llvmpipe as renderer, does anybody know why?

Re: Problem with newer kernels and Radeon 880M

#9 Post by j2mcgreg »

It might be too new. In general, Linux's hardware support lags behind Windows by 6 mo. to a year or more. If this is your situation, you will just have to be patient and keep trying newer kernels until you find one that works properly.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Re: Problem with newer kernels and Radeon 880M

@kohlhaas If I am not mistaken, that driver for the amd is coming from a repo that is ubuntu based and may be an issue.

Your qsi shows this:

Code: Select all

deb https://repo.radeon.com/amdgpu/6.1.3/ubuntu focal main

Someone else here might know if that is a problem, but ubuntu repos / ppa's are never good.
*QSI = Quick System Info from menu (Copy for Forum)
*MXPI = MX Package Installer
*Please check the solved checkbox on the post that solved it.
*Linux -This is the way!
