Update no icons on desktop

#1 Post by capnkirby »

Hi all,
The update today did something similar to me, in my case there are no icons on the desktop at all, but are still showing in the /home%user%/Desktop folder. All configuration such as rotating backgrounds, where the backgrounds are kept, are no longer working but are still showing set up in the manner they were prior to the update. I also have no right click menu options at this time on the desktop but I do in Thunar and other apps. Attempts to add icons back to the desktop do not show up on the desktop but are now shown in the /Desktop folder. Everything else seems fairly normal thus far, will update if I see anything else odd.

Thanks,
Capn

I have created a new user which does have desktop icons and normal functionality, in comparing the .rc files in /home/%user%/.config/xfce4/desktop/ I am seeing that the original user (without working icons) has:

[xfdesktop-version-4.10.3+-rcfile_format]
4.10.3+=true

in them, where the new users do not,

removed the reference noted above and no change noted.

I have seen that the last update of debian and xfce mess with some xfce4 settings and can cause various problems. ( various settings either are no longer used, or some type of different value now.)

While it is a bit unnerving, I would reset your xfce4 settings to be clean.

You should:
1) Back you your panel if you have modifed and want to keep it. (MX Tools, Back up Panel. )

2) Backup your Theme set (again if you want to keep it) MX Tweak | Theme tab - "Save Current Settings as a Theme Set)

3) Rename your ~/.config/xfce4 folder some something like z_xfce4

4) Reboot

Upon logging in you should see a different wall paper, the panel should be all default and you should see your desktop icons. If you do, then proceed to restore your panel and theme

1) MX Tweak, restore panel (you should see your last panel backup ) and then click on apply

2) MX Teak | Theme tab, under Theme Options, Click on the drop down and choose the theme name you saved and then click apply

3) Lastly, change your wallpaper back to one you had before

You *will* have a few things that will be different. Possibly display settings, icon sizes, etc etc. Nothing should be tremendous, but you will see some differences.
