Upgrade to mx23.5 destroyed many functions
Upgrade to mx23.5 destroyed many functions
Extreme problem. I have multiple computers, 2 are mx23, both upgraded to mx23.5 and xfce latest.
Now, when I use a passive kvm and switch tp ANY other computer, NEITHER mx23.5 computers ary able to restart monitors, not the case withMacs or another mx comp, mx21.
This upgradt has wasted many hous of my time. Now, forced to re-usy snapshot made in sept 2024 to reinstall mx23 (old) with no intention of doing ANY upgrades until I know they recognize and fix this problem and the next one:
All desktop icons NOW have white backgrounds when I open up ANY applications, terminal, synaptic, etc.
MXLINUX BOUGHT THE FARM ON THIS ONE.
BTW. Changing power manager, and system settingf DO NOT FIX the monitor problem.

As per this topic, you can fix the icons very easily.rocaro wrote: Thu Jan 16, 2025 5:35 pm Extreme problem. I have multiple computers, 2 are mx23, both upgraded to mx23.5 and xfce latest.

I have been fixing display issues with two different fixes:
1) remove or rename ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-power-manager.xml
__ Then restart your computer
and the other is
2) Reset the screensaver / display timeouts
__ uninstall xfce4 screen saver
__ install xscreensaver
__ open xscreensaver and change your display timeout to 20 min. Wait at least 5 minutes and then go back in and change the timeout to never and disable .
__ Make sure that power Manager is set to NOT turn off displays.

Re: Upgrade to mx23.5 destroyed many functions
Hard to tell from the information provided, but this definitely sounds like the makings of a display driver problem and not necessarily something about the MX-23.5 release itself. A lot less buying the farm and more renting a stall at the Saturday produce market.CharlesV wrote: Thu Jan 16, 2025 6:10 pm I have been fixing display issues with two different fixes:
Re: Upgrade to mx23.5 destroyed many functions
You are correct that could very well be it.. but I have been all over the place fixing monitor and power issues from the update. (including myself.) Something is taking place with power manager and it seems to be related to xfce4 screen saver AND power manager. (ie like power manager is not following the settings that the xfce4 screensaver has set ? )DukeComposed wrote: Thu Jan 16, 2025 6:27 pmHard to tell from the information provided, but this definitely sounds like the makings of a display driver problem and not necessarily something about the MX-23.5 release itself. Re: Upgrade to mx23.5 destroyed many functions
Answers to both recomendations.
Icons - If you encounter my problems, try it. It does not work, and, it will make the priblem much worse. You will see..
Power manager - i will try the uninstall, reinstall and post.
I did roll back, installing from snapshot from 5 months ago.
Absolutely bo problems.
There are no problems w driver(s). No nvidia, etc., only stock nouveaux. I repeat, a roll back to pre 23.5 has none of these issues.
I am positive the developers will see them and fix them.

Re: Upgrade to mx23.5 destroyed many functions
The biggest problem that makes the 23.5 computers unusable as tools is the kvm problem.
Even if I just rebooted either computer, once I switch via the kvm, each computer I return to has a black screen. This is not the case with any other computer or installed other distro of mx.

you can see the 2 forum helpers have different views of what is possibly wrong, and that is because you have not provided your quick system info and they are working in the dark. Please paste you QSI here, as Eadwine Rose has already requested.

Re: Upgrade to mx23.5 destroyed many functions
I experienced the same thing with dual monitors (AMD Radeon 580) after installing the 23.5 update. The icon labels on both screens turned into a dull blurry black/dark grey with a white background. This was using my default Bluebird (gtk3, gtk2, xfwm4) style. I switched to the Adwaita style and the labels returned to normal.
The lock screen stopped working as well with the xscreensaver and lightdm. I don't use the xfce4-screensaver application.
I tried the uninstall and reinstall the power manager and the xcreensaver applications without any resolution to the problem.
To fix the lock screen problem, I had to:
- turn off the display power management in the Power Manager Display tab for the plugged in option,
- leave the Security off for the Lock screen when system is going to sleep option under the Power Manager System Tab,
- under the LightDM GTK+ Greeter application settings, the Timeout until the screen blank was set to 15 minutes,
- under the XScreenSaver application: Blank Screen Settings Display Modes tab, I use a Blank Screen Only option and I set Blank After to 15 minutes, Cycle After to 0 minutes, and the Lock Screen After option is toggled on after 1 minute,
- under the Advanced tab for the ScreenSaver application, the Display Management Enabled is toggled on as well as the Quick Power-off in blank only mode. The Standby after and Suspend after are both set to 0 minutes, the Off After is set to 15 minutes. Both blanking options are off.
Pressing CTRL-ALT-L also works by blanking and locking both displays.
These settings fixed the lock screen issue that I never had before the 23.5 update.
BTW, I'm also using XScreenSaver 2023 v6.08.

Re: Upgrade to mx23.5 destroyed many functions
Thank you very much for the detailed reply. I will try all by tomorrow. Where do I find lightdm+greeter, not in repo?
Btw, I use "Greybird MX" and Greybird-dark MX Accessibility due to old eyes... the only one I like, easiest for long term.
I have been devoted to mx since mx17, having come from pure debian.
