how get readable desktop folders
Hi, we changed the font size in applications/settings/appearance/font. https://www.fosslinux.com/67840/mx-linux-review.htm
Before couldn't read the folder names on the desktop because too small, now because there are only 3 caracters shown!It would be nice to have a readable desktop, how can one create that? Preferable without 'my first Sony' size icons. Dont need the icons to get bigger, only the names. Xfce v: 4.20.0 tk: Gtk v: 3.24.38- MX-23.5_x64

Menu > Settings Manager > Desktop Icons tab > Appearance
or
Right click on the desktop > Desktop Settings... > Desktop Icons tab > Appearance
Then change Icon size, Font size, etc.

You might also check this topic as it resolves some visual issues kind of like your describing.Pretty Vacant wrote: Tue Jan 14, 2025 6:37 pm Hi, we changed the font size in applications/settings/appearance/font. https://www.fosslinux.com/67840/mx-linux-review.htm

point is i don't need the Icon size changed. There is not any more info shown when make them big, it's useless.Like i said: without 'my first Sony' size icons.Then change Icon size, Font size, etc.
I need to get the complete filename visible and in readible font size.

QSI please.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;
In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Re: how get readable desktop folders
I need to get the complete filename visible and in readible font size.
I had a file named .gtkrc-2.0 with the following content:
Code: Select all
style "xfdesktop-icon-view" {
XfdesktopIconView::ellipsize-icon-labels = 0
}
widget_class "*XfdesktopIconView*" style "xfdesktop-icon-view"
I put that in /username to get long file names on the desktop.
Whether that still works, not a clue. It worked back then, I don't use it anymore, maybe it helps.

Re: how get readable desktop folders
As one can see from my fastfetch output, I'm currently running KDE, but didn't we make "don't shorten file names" an option for XFCE in MX Tweak because of questions like this?
(off to run MXfce in a virtual machine to check)
I'm not too hot about cluttering up desktops with app shortcuts and files, either...I like using the menu and file managers instead, but different strokes, I guess.

Re: how get readable desktop folders
Yes, MX Tweak, Config Options Tab has
Disable Shortening of long filenames on the desktop.
with that checked, my long fiel names in all their glory are displayed.

Re: how get readable desktop folders
In testing this is how I got the full file name visible at the font size selected.
In my test I used 63 characters with the name "the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog’s back. 1234567890" (minus the quotes) and selected a font size of 20. My monitor screen size is 1920 x 1080.
1. Go to "MX Tweak" > "Config Options" tab > enable the bottom entry "Disable shortening of long filenames on the desktop" > click the "Apply" button at the bottom of the window.
2. Go to "Desktop" (either in the Whisker Menu -OR- right-click the desktop > "Desktop Settings")
3. On the "Desktop Icons" tab > enable "Font size:" > adjust the size as desired.
This is an example of the above. I had re-named the Firefox desktop icon with the 63-character file name and used a font size of 20.
