permissions/ownership MX-KDE

#1 Post by CurlyStooge »

Hello. Ok, so I have had this type of problem also on previous two distros ( Zorin, Mint). I installed MX fine, set up so I the only user doesnt login as root but I have sudo privs admin etc. I can su in konsole to root etc. On the desktop though I seem to not be able to do certain things. Mostly executing a software program(s) and also in file manager( Using PCManFM) under places, filesystem root, the root folder has lock symbol and all other folders are owned by root. The bin, sbin, lib and lib64 all have the little arrows on the folder icon, assuming meaning link. So after downloading software and then tring to run it basicallly does nothing. Also same kinda issues with zip files. I am using old hardware and the system seems to really be bogged down at times, memory issue I believe. At the beginning by User:says JRD (*thats me*) (unknown) I will include a full sys report. Is this a usr, user, permissions and or owner issue? Solvable with the chmod or chown cmd? Thank you!

uhm, yeah.. Lets have you post your qsi and properly please. ( use the Post for Forum button and then paste here.)
*QSI = Quick System Info from menu (Copy for Forum)
*MXPI = MX Package Installer
*Please check the solved checkbox on the post that solved it.
*Linux -This is the way!

CurlyStooge wrote: Sun Dec 15, 2024 2:26 pmSo after downloading software and then tring to run it basicallly does nothing.
it may help to add some info about this. can you give an example of software or a program that you have downloaded that isn't working? how did you download it and from where? how are you trying to run it?

editing to add: in regards to the system feeling bogged down, some of these temps seem like they may be on the high side:

@CurlyStooge
I removed your bolding. There's no need to shout.
When you post tracts of code like this please encase it in code tags which makes it easier to read and navigate here in the forum. I did it for you this time so that you can see how it's done.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Well thank you. I was not shouting. For me, it just seemed easier to see and read. I don't know about code tags, I am sure it is stated in the rules.? I will learn about it along with many other Linux things. I am really trying! I am sorry if it came off rude or "extra".

@CharlesV I am sorry. I know about using the qsi, I have before. I just did ot see enough info in that info, wanted to be more detailed. I am trying to learn, but perhaps since I can't even post a question correctly and really just annoy others I should seek help some other way. I can remove my post if need be. Here is the proper way, quick system info. I checked no boxes below.

@CurlyStooge
Both your Apple TS256C SSD and your Seagate ST31000528AS HDD are at least twelve years old and should be replaced. These old drives are the likely cause of the sluggishness you are reporting.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

I'm not sure what you are asking, but the only areas of the filesystem that are owned by user are inside the home folder. for actions anywhere else, you'll need to use sudo or some other elevated privileged.

but you should be able to run applications. perhaps a concrete example of what application you are trying to run from your desktop?

FYI: mx "test" repo is not the same thing as debian testing repo.

@CurlyStooge There are a few very specific things that we look for in the QSi and they tell us quite a lot. ( that is why we ask for it.)

What you have stated in your question is actually all sounding very normal to a linux system (as Zorin, Mint and MX all show.) and as Dolphin_Oracle outlined.

As for your user being "unknown" this is what the hardwareinfo utility says, in every case that I have seen.

Some applications you add to the system MAY need to have their permissions set to Execute, but if your installing using a DEB package, then it should run. (And it does depend upon where you install from. Installing from the MX Package Installer or from KDE Discover should be your best places to install apps from.

In bringing up a new machine, I just found that if you click on your empty profile picture it opens a Dialog called Mugshot, which has the "Unknown" name that hardinfo2 uses. if you change the First Name field to your login, then Hardinfo will show that.
