MakeMKVcon dependency libc6 version issue (used with VLC)
Today I tried to use MakeMKV to play a blu-ray disc with VLC. Nope. (DVD still plays.) Using method shown a couple years ago on LinuxCapable.
Terminal showed "no response from makemkvcon". and something about later version of libc6 expected (2.34?) but earlier version present (2.31?).
Can this be restored?
I also use SMplayer/mpv, mediainfo, handbrake and LibreWolf.

Re: MakeMKVcon dependency libc6 version issue
You're using a 3rd party repo for makemkv from what I can see.
Maybe you should ask the providers of the repo why a repo they marked as bullseye is requiring a libc6 that is newer than that in Debian Bullseye? This is a core dependency that doesn't just get changed in a particular Debian release.

Re: MakeMKVcon dependency libc6 version issue
Thanks for that clarity.
Would it make more sense to uninstall makemkv and that repository, and then use mxpi?

Best to uninstall and remove repo.
I'm not booted into mx and can't tell you if we have a version of makemkv.

Re: MakeMKVcon dependency libc6 version issue
If I uninstall makemkv and uncheck the repository in synaptic and reload, I don't see a listing for makemkv in synaptic.
MXPI shows only a flatpak (1.17.7), nothing in enabled repos, test, or backports.
VLC 3.0.21-0+deb11u1 is currently installed.

Re: MakeMKVcon dependency libc6 version issue
If I select the makemkv flatpak in MXPI five org.videolan.VLC.plugin.makemkv versions pop up - which, if any, should I use?
( Not a fan of flatpaks - is there a better way to fix this? )

Re: MakeMKVcon dependency libc6 version issue
Should I test on LiveUSB first?
( I suspect it's not as simple as installing a flatpak and plugin ...
else there wouldn't be such efforts to overcome dependency issues as those by third-party repositories ...)

Re: MakeMKVcon dependency libc6 version issue
Last snapshot apparently working dated 2024-SEP-29. Should I install from LiveUSB?
Note about repo emailed. ( Wonder if anyone's got these working on latest MX snapshot? )

Re: MakeMKVcon dependency libc6 version issue (used with VLC)
No response to email. I suspect that repo isn't well-maintained. It's an apt PPA, and may be mostly aimed at Ubuntu.
The repo by mathias serves.
Tried on LiveUSB with 20241115 snapshot:
MakeMKV (1.17.7) installed. Dependency libmmbd listed but not installed - added. Beta key used for temporary registration.
MakeMKV preference option Integration applied. Menu not working yet - need to add java … found "Recommends" libbluray-bdj
VLC: audio working, video pixelated … avoid "hardware acceleration" … subtitle background not showing … (sigh
) always something …

Re: MakeMKVcon dependency libc6 version issue (used with VLC, handbrake)
I have two systems with bullseye-based MX installed - one NUC, one Studio Hybrid 140g. I use a portable top-load USB disc drive when working with a disc.
On both systems:
Removed makemkv, apt PPA & key. Added mathias' repo & key, installed makemkv(1.17.7) (added libmmbd0), libbluray-bdj; registered with beta key, set Integration/applied.
MakeMKV starts & runs OK; VLC starts but crashes (disappears) unless started w/o menu, SMplayer just crashes - for Blu-ray discs;
For DVD VLC starts OK but subtitles soon crash, or VLC subtitle display fails to overlay background to make style visible.
SMplayer gets stuck on menu, doesn't play movie/episodes. ( Could be OS wobbling off tracks - browser memory leaks ...)
= (Sigh) An update isn't always an upgrade. Version 1.17.8-1~bpo11+1 resurrected a version mismatch between libc and makemkvcon.
I'm not convinced "root" should be required for installation; still suspect that broke subtitle style visibility settings.
