I was trying to find a distro for such a long time for my aging Thinkpad X230 that I picked up from Yahoo Auctions Japan for under 10 USD a few years ago. I've tried Windows 10 and 11, and various Linux distros (Ubuntu, Mint, Arch, vanilla Debian, Peppermint) and so many DEs.
I found out about MX Linux through some forums and was interested in the lighter footprint in using SysV. I started off with MX Linux + Plasma, and while it worked so well, I'm not too keyed into the KDE Plasma DE. There were a lot of quirks that I struggled through (e.g., needing to install smb4k in order to mount and use one of my samba shares as an actual drive, rather than Dolphin trying to download every file locally before interacting with it) and some cases where suspend would lock up because I failed to unmount my drives before putting the machine to sleep. I'm pretty sure 90% of it was user error, but maybe these are quirks that more wiser users anticipate, but I struggled with it. Performance on MX Linux + Plasma was terrific. I was really surprised, as I remember from my early Linux years that KDE could be pretty heavy.
In comes MX Linux xfce. Performancewise, I feel like my old dual core i5-3320M works so well! The resource management in this OS is so nice and gentle on my X230. It sips power, and I'm able to watch 1080p youtube videos without the cooler going off like a turbine like it did in Windows. Full disclosure, I actually had a bit of bias towards xfce, as it always felt like a bit ... ugly. But superficial bits aside, I now understand the merits of it. Simple, straight to the point and easily configurable. MX Linux seriously pairs this ease of use with efficiency and various settings that are in the UI which helped me make it into my own.
I'm still daily driving a mac for work and as a family computer, but being confident that I can take my X230 around town with MX Linux and still have a reliable system that won't chew through unnecessary resources is such a huge win for me.
Thank you devs, contributors, community members. I've been perusing these forums quite intensely for the past few days, and I've learned a lot through many of your experiences. Please keep up the great work!
