Request for XFCE-NIGHTMODE

#1 Post by OKie »

I'm requesting a package for xfce-nightmode. It changes themes between night (dark) and day (light or some other dark) based on time of day or press of a panel button.

https://github.com/bimlas/xfce4-night-mode

It looks like it has basic functionality. It's a shell script that switches themes/wallpapers between light and dark at certain times of day. Requires xfce4-genmon-plugin for it to be added as a toggle to the panel.

It works by creating its own xfce-nightmode channel in the XFCE settings database. Has some cooperation with redshift. There's a bunch of manual setup that should probably be gui-fied. Not sure I agree with the author's decisions, but many people like it. It seems like it has a few moving parts and would probably be better adopted if it were packaged. The instructions are not so clear on what needs to be done to get it to work. It supposedly can handle multiple monitors, but I'm trying to figure that out right now.

I think the development team might even like it for themselves, assuming it works well.

Redshift-gtk which is the one you want is available to install via the mx-package installer under enabled repos. Once installed you need to set the lat & long and color saturation you can do that by editing the menu entry. Add the following to the launch command

Code: Select all

redshif-gtk -l Lat:long -t 6500:3300
once you've done that and launch it when the icon comes up in the tray. right click on it and select Autostart and it will start when you sign it.
Good luck.

I already have redshift-gtk. It doesn't change themes or backgrounds.

For example, redshift wont change Adwaita to Adwaita-dark at night.

I saw someone writing an untested script to work with redshift to do this sort of thing, but this addon seemed better. If you don't want to do it, fine. I'll get it running on my own machine. But it seems like the sort of thing that would be generally useful.

redshift is not designed to change themes it only changes the color saturation from day to night. It removes blue light at night depending on your settings. It used to do the location thing using Geoclue to find your Lat & Long automatically but geoclue was dropped by I think it was Firefox so it's no longer available. I don't know of a night light that shifts themes. That's not their job. If you want something that will shift themes or backgrounds from day to night you would have to write a shell script to do that.

That's why I'm requesting someone consider packaging xfce4-night-mode on the test repo.
