R.I.P Zilog Z80 1976-2024

#1 Post by AK-47 »

So I just discovered, with a heavy heart, that the Zilog Z80 has been discontinued with last orders June 14, 2024. But its ghost still lives on, in the eZ80.

But of course, the eZ80 doesn't have that 40-pin DIP package to stick into a breadboard anymore. The Z80 is/was used in a lot of things other than PCs also, so you likely have come across one without even knowing about it.

And let's not forget the 6502... IMO a more than worthy Z80 competitor (personally, I much preferred 6502's assembly language to Z80's).

https://monster6502.com/ showcases this CPU in spectacular fashion.
Frugal installs on Lenovo ThinkPad L14 Ryzen 5 4650U/24GB * HP Pavilion Ryzen 3 3300U/16GB * Toshiba R950 i5-3340M/12GB
I have a reservation... What do you mean it's not in the COMPUTER!

6502 assembly is also the preferred programming language of the Cyberdyne Systems Model 101, more commonly known as The Terminator.

By the year 2999, it also runs bending units.
