Recommend a printer? Inkjet, cheap, cheap ink

Looking them up online is a pain, trying to see if they'll run on linux, another pain, making sure it has USB connection, another pain.
I've got the list of Gutenprint covered printers open, but I don't know what companies might provide linux drivers.
A printer/scanner/copier would also be OK.
I'm running this:
Code: Select all
System:
Kernel: 6.9.8-1-liquorix-amd64 [6.9-7~mx23ahs] arch: x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 12.2.0 parameters: audit=0
intel_pstate=disable BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-6.9.8-1-liquorix-amd64 root=UUID=<filter> ro nosplash
Desktop: Xfce v: 4.18.1 tk: Gtk v: 3.24.36 info: xfce4-panel wm: xfwm v: 4.18.0 vt: 7
dm: LightDM v: 1.26.0 Distro: MX-23.3_ahs_x64 Libretto October 15 2023 base: Debian GNU/Linux
12 (bookworm)
Thank you!

You should be fine with any HP inkjet.
There's really no such thing as cheap inkjet ink.
If you really want to keep your printing costs down, you can't beat a monochrome laser.

In the long run a laser printer is cheaper, because the toner will last you up to 3 years before you have to buy a new toner. And toner is much cheaper than ink for a inkjet.
HP is usually the best company to deal with. Even Brother is good. I found a Samsung laser printer I really like. It's not color, but I don't do many color prints. If I ever need color prints I'll just go to my local drug store that has a color printer. Plus Black toner is much cheaper than color ink.
My is a printer/ scanner/ copier easy to download their Linux drivers off their site and install them. Samsung Xpress M2070FM Not sure they still have this model. HP and Brother are good like I said.

I have had very good luck with the Epson EcoTanks. The ET-2800 is a $200 printer that scans and is pretty darn good. (And ink is WAY cheaper for most people. )
But if you really want a quality print, with a less expensive cost.. then I agree a laser is the way to go.

I did a little more searching.
I'm looking at a Brother MFC-J1010DW. An "all in one". It looks like it will work. .... Will it?

I went for it. $69.99 new on that jungle-sounding place.
Thanks guys, you made it easier.
My use case is almost never printing. Every year at tax time I replace my dried-out ink. That's a Canon IP2600 I always went to Windows 7 for printing. Canon and MS don't provide the drivers for 10 or 11, and Canon doesn't post its old drivers for the "retired" equipment any more. - - And I couldn't find a cure for the ip2600 in Linux.
If I start to get print-happy, I will definitely look into laser jets.
Thanks again.

My HL-L2320D Brother laser printer works ootb in MX-23.3.
The
printer-driver-brlaser driver package is installed by default on MX-23.3 and the HL-L2320D is one of the printers that it supports.
Code: Select all

MFC-J1010DW isn't listed as one supported by the printer-driver-brlaser driver. For the MFC-J1010DW you might try fehlix's Brother-Printer-Installer-Helper Script here
viewtopic.php?p=447475#p447475, it's worked well for me in the past.

Thanks, @kmathern.
That will be very helpful if it does not plug and play when it gets here, in a few days.
Thank you all.

UPDATE:
Neither of my Linux varieties found the driver, but Brother had a bash installer for Debian.
Everything works great with MX. Printer and scanner.
Thanks.
FYI, the install script burped on a couple of things, and warned about AppArmor, as follows in this part of the echo:

Even more reason NOT to opt for an inkjet printer... You named the reason there yourself. Laserjets don't dry out even if you print only once a year.
Just saying.

Or rather, they work way better when they are dried out?

Thanks.

No, LaserJet's don't use ink; they are laser printers, use toner, and don't ever dry out.

I spaz around on the forum format. I looked for a button to paste it as code for a while...
I am now WAY more likely to remember the code {code}. :)

Yes. The phrase "keep your powder dry" has been attributed to Oliver Cromwell during the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland (1649–1653) who apparently recognized that the printer is more powerful than other weapons of war. This was later paraphrased as "the pen is mightier than the sword" by Edward Bulwer-Lytton in 1839 who had no understanding of how laserjet printers work and preferred handwriting his works.

The HL-L2320D is discontinued. Thanks for the info kmathern. From my experience you should never get an ink printer unless you specifically need ink prints. The cartridges always dry up if you don't use them. Laser toner cartridges do not just dry up simply because you didn't print in 3 months and the weather was warm.
