Filesystem type ntfs3,ntfs not configured in kernel

#1 Post by Michael_Logies »

After an update of MX, I don`t know which, NTFS is no longer working. I get:

Code: Select all

Error mounting /dev/sda1 at /media/ml/PortableSSD: Filesystem type ntfs3,ntfs not configured in kernel
Packages "ntfs-3g" and "syslinux" are installed. (I deinstalled and reinstalled, but made no difference.)
Can anyone help?
Thanks!
Michael

maybe post /etc/fstab in case an entry requests ntfs3, which is unsupported by the kernel in use.

fstab:

Gemini told me to use:

Code: Select all

lsmod | grep ntfs
NTFS should be the answer, but answer is empty. fuse3 is installed. ocamlfuse is working.

I tried something different after asking Gemini, but don`t know whether this made any sense or what the answer means for an external USB3-drive:

Code: Select all

sudo mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /media/ml/PortableSSD
Incomplete multi-sector transfer: magic: 0x454c4946 size: 1024 usa_ofs: 48 usa_count: 1 data: 30696 usn: 285: Eingabe-/Ausgabefehler

NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a
SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows
then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very
important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate
it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g.
/dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation
for more details.

Looks like file system is corrupt or USB-device is faulty (or underpowered)
Try another good one, to see that not the USB-controler or connection related.
USB-storage device do have a limited livespan depending on write cylcles.

I connected the external SSD to a laptop with ChromeOS Flex and ChromeOS could not read the SSD, too. I then went to the last Windows-PC in my home and did a

Code: Select all

chkdsk d:/f
which did the trick. There was an error in the mirror of the MFT-table which was fixed and SSD can be mounted now. Thanks Fehlix!

Maybe choose a native Linux files system like ext4, which provides jounaling and regularly fsck.

I still need Windows for my office, so my backup media still have to be NTFS. But I did chkdsk on 3 other external SSDs and one of them did show the samt MFT mirror error. With a new windows machine and an external, slightly defect/incompatible, external USB-hub I had a lot of problems, disruptions. So I will have to check all my externals SSDs. I`m using one external SSD with ext4 on my MX machine, so that Timeshift can use it. Timeshift and luckybackup are great, simple software, IMHO. Timeshift already helped me restoring my system.
