Browser slow cold start

#1 Post by n8ive999 »

I have been experiencing a strange situation on MX with a particular web browser.

Vivaldi (6.7.3329.39 Stable) has a very long cold start, i.e. approximately 60s.
I have started this thread on the Vivaldi forum,

https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/98873/s ... oot?page=1

and the discussion seems to point to an issue with combination of MX and Vivaldi configurations, but as yet, everyone seems to be stumped by it.

Can you please shed some light on this?

My setup
Lenovo Thinkpad X201 core i7
MX23

A few things jump out immediately to me, your QSI shows:

1) Your swap is engage at 31mb at this time?
__ how heavy a load is your machine running at?

2) Your machine is 12 years old, how old is that hard drive?
__ THAT model HD is a 5400rpm, so it is slower then a fast drive.

Run vivaldi from a shell and post the messages please.
*QSI = Quick System Info from menu (Copy for Forum)
*MXPI = MX Package Installer
*Please check the solved checkbox on the post that solved it.
*Linux -This is the way!

Thanks for the reply.

As the thread quoted will show, I run Brave on exactly the same specs, and get different results.
Current swap is irrelevant, as all tests are done just after startup, when RAM is at around 700M (out of 8G). My Swappiness=15.
There are also testimonies from other users (on Debian12) with more modern equipment showing the same results as I.

I'll try to get the shell messages at the next boot.

My current situation is MXlinux with Brave as the default browser; there is no problem with this. My question is why does Vivaldi show this inappropriate behaviour on exactly the same system? Especially when I prefer Vivaldi to Brave.

You're comparing two different browsers. That would be like comparing Waterfox to LibreWolf. Sure, both are Firefox clones but are built differently from source.

How many extensions do you have installed? How many tabs open when you start the browser? Have you tried clearing the cache? Have you tried with a new user profile?
This is my Fluxbox . There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My Fluxbox is my best friend. It is my life.
I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my Fluxbox is useless. Without my Fluxbox, I am useless.

Vivaldi can a bit of a resource hog and not great at releasing memory after the fact.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

I did and of all the rigs described, the one whose specs are closest to yours is still seven generations newer and is going to be much faster.

I did and others in that thread also bought this up.

After reboot, on a cold start of Vivaldi, this is the only output from shell

Code: Select all

vivaldi-stable
libva error: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/iHD_drv_video.so init failed

This does not explain why Brave starts 10 times faster.
And why others have the same issue.
