weird failure mode - the updater entry no longer shows, many 'open with' options no longer work eg featherpad, VLC, nomacs .. when there are updates available the green box re-appears and following the update all the above problems disappear - next reboot I can no longer use VLC etc
AFAIK I've only loaded via updates

I suggest you move to a newer release 19.x will stop being supported by Debian at the end of this month and we won't build apps for it anymore, it might be worth putting the effort into moving to a newer base than trying to fix whatever problems you have.

I've tried out MX21which once I moved Samba back to supporting old devices (a key requirement for me), I might move to put this as my 'web facing' machine - catch is at my age (old enough for my 1st home machine to be in the UK Science museum) I don't really appreciate forever chasing new programs, especially once they start insisting on subscription for features I don't need, when the old handle my work flow fine. MX19 seemed to just hit the spot for me.

Just now retried vlc etc and all is now working - yet before I posted initial message I'd given up on trying things (reboots, etc) as the problem first appeared some days ago - most of my computer time is spent on other machines with MX19 on the small laptop used for travelling + holding my music downloads from BBC R3 . I suspect if I now rebooted my problem will re-appear.

update
finally found problem to be a strange hardware error with the solid state drive - copying the drive to another drive restored functionality - quick tests on the old drive indicated no fault so still unsure of reason but at least have a working system

I have setup MX21 to cover most of my needs but the new security apparently built into MX23 so far blocks my use with a network (behind a router) - MX19 just hit the sweet spot for me as minor changes to one can be real nuisances for another.
