Black screen after boot with default grub option

#1 Post by ComeWhatThey »

Issue popped up today after I let my laptop run out of battery, necessitating a reboot. Fairly fresh install, only a week or two old. Did some updates last night and when I went to boot up today I get a completely dead black screen immediately after the mountains animation. Not able to ctrl+alt+f1 into a terminal. Selecting the systemd option in grub allows the system to boot up fine.

Installed Liquorix 6.8.12-1 from MXPI as suggested from a similar post, but I get the exact same behaviour. Black screen after boot animation, boots fine with the systemd option.

What if you change the ... splash to nosplash in "MX Boot Options" and then select to boot with non-systemd option on Grub? Maybe it shows where it gets stuck ...

(Or you can press E on Grub and do that temporarily rather than MXBO)

( It may be waiting for a resume device. The question is why it doesn't do it with systemd ... )

also.. your QSI shows a NON liquorix kernel (and 6.1.0 has some quirks too ) ... are you *sure* that you booted WITH a later liquorix kernel?
*QSI = Quick System Info from menu (Copy for Forum)
*MXPI = MX Package Installer
*Please check the solved checkbox on the post that solved it.

The QSI is from when I first experienced the bug, but it made no difference to the behaviour whether I select the liquorix options in grub or not.

The boot messages go by so fast I had to try to record them on video, best I can tell this is the last frame before the black screen.

So nothing obvious, maybe to do with the kernel variables? Could at least point towards where in the process it's happening.

Though it looks weird, "why Bluetooth" ... You can try to disable that service at boot time ("MX Service Manager" from menu) then try what happens with a reboot.

Disabling bluetooth at boot makes no difference.

... So, is there any difference now, where it stops ?

No, still around the same 'starting setting kernel variables: sysctl.' message as before, just without the bluetooth clutter. It kind of looks like it's trying to draw another message after that, but it disappears before my camera can pick it up.

If it helps at all, I'm pretty sure that whatever broke it must have happened in this batch of updates, as it was working fine before then.
