xscreensaver sometimes fails

#1 Post by bitfikler »

Hi!
I'm using xscreensaver on my MX 21.3 x64. Sometimes it does not work and display this error message:

not launching hack (throttled.)

Image

Is this an error that can be caught in the program and corrected?

xscreensaver is known to be buggy.Your best option is to uninstall it and if you want a similar function, install light-locker.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Completely remove including config files, xfce4-screensaver, it's the combo of them both being present that messes stuff up IIRC.

Thank you for your answers and suggestions!

One question though: Where do I find the config files so I can delete them?

I have since lately xxxxxxx up the whole thing by entering wrong settings for GLtext and need to find where this setting is stored to be able to delete it...''

Looking forward to an answer. :)

Lads and Lasses: on MX-21 no xfce4-screensaver ootb (and "that" was/is the buggy one on MX-19 and 23). Also light-locker is already installed ootb on MX-21 :)

xscreensaver has been a rolling disaster for a couple of years at least. (use apt-get purge xscreensaver)

If you were to remove xfce4-screensaver with the purge option (apt-get purge xfce4-screensaver), the configuration files will also be removed. However, left-behind configuration files will do no harm.

That said, xfce4-screensaver works fine in MX-23. I've been using it since it was ported to xfce4 from mate-screensaver. BTW, the autostart file is found in /etc/xdg/autostart/
