Copy/Paste Files on the Desktop

Hello All,

Is it still possible to copy/paste a file on the Desktop without the message about "Confirm to replace files" appearing each time?
In the past it was done auto by renaming, and the pasted file would be named "filename (copy 1).extension".
Now it only works with folders and not individual files as it did previously.
The exception to this being if the Desktop folder is actually open with Thunar, be it minimised or otherwise, if I copy/paste a file using it's Desktop icon then it works straight away, auto renaming the file as in previous versions of Xfce, no message asking to confirm appears.
If one copy/pastes any file in any Thunar window it still auto renames without asking, just no longer on the Desktop.

Is there a way to have it remember the "Rename" choice when copy/pasting files on the Desktop?

Interesting.. I can duplicate this on both mx21 and mx 23 machines, but never noticed it before.

I will look more for this behavior, but so far I have only found your post on the xfce board about it.

Edit: I forgot to say ... I agree that this did NOT happen on mx19

I don't recall it happening on early releases of MX21 either, pretty sure it began after an update of Xfce somewhere along the line.
Not a real problem, but slows things down a bit when doing a lot of work on the Desktop.
A check button option to remember the user's choice would be nice.

Just found by accident another issue with this behaviour.

Can somebody please try the following to see if it's a further issue with the behaviour I mentioned above?

Have a file on the Desktop, right click & copy it, then right click and paste on the Desktop, when the message box comes up asking to rename or replace etc. click Replace.

Does your file disappear?

After the file vanishes, if I right click & Paste on the Desktop again I get a message "Error getting information from ~/Desktop/name-of-file no such file or directory"

Also try creating a new folder on the Desktop, leave it empty, right click & copy it, then right click on the Desktop and Paste, nothing happens.

Put some files in that folder, then from the Desktop right click and copy the folder, then right click and Paste on the Desktop, this time the message comes up asking to rename, replace etc. the files that were put in the folder.
Click Replace, open the folder and the files are gone.

As with the previous post scenario, when working with the Desktop open as a Thunar window these things don't happen, it works as it should, the empty folder gets copied and auto renamed, and the files remain inside the folder as they should when it's copied.

Those issues are repeatable every time.

Boot Mode: BIOS (legacy, CSM, MBR)
I get nothing like this for this two tests. When I do the paste, the file or folder is copied to a second copy ( or third etc), just like in thunar file window. ( on mx 23, I will test on mx21 a little later )

I just started up a couple of laptops to see what they do, one has MX-21.3 & the other has MX-23.6 and neither of them do it.
21.3 the message box asking to rename, replace etc. comes up but it replaces as expected, 23.6 it pastes and auto renames however many times is desired.

Only thing I've been doing except emails and browsing is messing with the lightdm-gtk-greeter.css for the theme I use for the greeter, trying to make stuff on the login window transparent.
Wouldn't think that would have anything to do with it though, that was the file I lost initially when I clicked the wrong option on the message box, working on a copy of it on the Desktop, if I messed up I just copied and pasted the original unaltered one and tried again.
Also tried a full restart, didn't change anything.
I have the Rubbish icon turned off, turned it on thinking maybe the files that were vanishing might be in there but they aren't.

EDIT: For each attempt to get the .css how I wanted it I opened a root Thunar instance on the Desktop, then copied and pasted the .css file into the relevant theme folder in /usr/share/themes then logged out and back in again.

Solved with a script provided by Misko_2083 on the Xfce Forum
Works faster than the default as only a single right and single left click is required after selecting :cool:

EDIT: the script is for a Thunar custom action.
