Boot Mode: UEFI
Background: I am responsible for trying to keep my sister's laptop working remotely. She lives in Chicago and I live in Alabama. And she has no clue about anything technical.
Her wireless availability has been iffy for a while and now appears to just be dead.
MxNetwork Assistant doesn't show any wlan0 at all.
and ifconfig also does not show any wlan0

So I am assuming that her wireless is dead. Or is there something else I can try?

If her router has Ethernet jacks, she could get one of these:
https://www.amazon.ca/Ethernet-Compatib ... 4f0011e37d
They work quite well and would be a good work around while you work on the internet problem.

I think though, that you should have her take the laptop to somewhere that has free wifi, like a library, and see if she can access the internet. If she can, then the answer is simple: she needs a new router from her ISP. If she can't, then tell her to purchase a USB dongle or stay with the Ethernet set up I mentioned earlier (which would allow you to try to fix it remotely).

Since network assistant can't find wlan0, it seems to me that it's more likely an issue with the laptop. Maybe she can try her router wi-fi with a smartphone to confirm that it's still working. Most phones let you USB tether to a computer to use its connection, too, preferably wi-fi instead of its more limited cellular connection--just to get it connected.

Does anyone have any experience with remote desktop protocol stuff on MX that could help with fixing a distant machine like in this case?

Perhaps she could check if the wifi on the laptop is actually turned off? On most (all?) laptops there should be a switch and/or a key press combination to ensure the wifi radio is turned on (or off). If this doesn't activate the internal wifi card that appears in your QSI, do as J2Mcgreg has suggested and get an inexpensive wifi dongle focusing on one most suited to MX and if you search the forum you will find information on that aspect of things and I would offer you this link which arose out of similar enquiries made in the past ..... https://github.com/morrownr/USB-WiFi/bl ... drivers.md

Normally I'd agree with you, but @Topher said this (above):
Her wireless availability has been iffy for a while and now appears to just be dead.
WiFi cards usually don't fade away, they work or they don't. However, the ISP supplied routers that we use in North America often do slowly die and this kit is not replaced until we complain.

@Topher Normally I'd suggest to look for a switch / Fn+... key or rfkill etc. however it seems to be "up" (otherwise it would be hard/soft blocked).

Still nothing to lose to have a look:

Code: Select all

rfkill
But:

What if you boot with an MX-23 official iso (usb etc.) and check on live session? (Or any recent distro or even Windows if there is).

Since she can not help me try things very easily, the simplest way is to get the usb dongle. She can handle "plug it in". All she uses the computer for is email and solitaire.
Thank you all for your help.

One other suggestion would be to reboot the router. Have her unplug the power cable for 15 seconds then plug it back in.

IMO, like @linexer2016 mentioned above, she might have hit the airplane key accidentally, and enabled the wireless button to OFF. For HP laptops, look at the F11 key which is the airplane mode key, or also known as the wireless button.
