Enlightenment XFCE and Boot Options

#1 Post by Griffy »

When I installed Enlightenment on this laptop, it will only boot with the systemd option (2nd option on the advanced boot menu). Is this normal? There is also a temp reading on the taskbar that says it's running hot (39c) but I don't think it is based on what it tells me when I boot into XFCE.

No. ALL MX installs boot to init (sys-v) by default. Did you (per haps) change the the default boot options in MX Boot Options.

There is also a temp reading on the taskbar that says it's running hot (39c) but I don't think it is based on what it tells me when I boot into XFCE.

Depending on the system, computers can run anywhere from 20-40 at idle depending if it's a laptop or tower.

My desktop (tower) computer runs at an average of 28 celsius. That's not hot.
This is my Fluxbox . There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My Fluxbox is my best friend. It is my life.
I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my Fluxbox is useless. Without my Fluxbox, I am useless.

Cause it shows black screen due to a (default) setting in Enlightenment :

Boot with systemd once more, then:

Open the Enlightenment Settings Panel : under the Look tab, click on the Composite option. Tick the "Don't fade backlight" box , click OK.

(Then reboot and try SysV )

Hi,

The temperature 'gadget' in Enlightenment allows you to select which sensor it displays, by default it might be showing you a different sensor than XFCE4 is. You can tell it which sensor to display in it's settings, to access the settings right-click on it.

I didn't change any boot options, just installed enlightenment. I will try the backlight option. Thanks for the responses.

I tried disabling the backlight as Charlie suggested, and still had to use systemd to boot into enlightenment. I had no issues booting into XFCE but not enlightenment. If I logout of XFCE I can get into enlightenment without issue but booting into it won't happen. I just get a black screen. I'm used to WM's being sparse after boot (which is why I like them) but this is just a black screen.

The issue is that XFCE4 is agnostic when it comes to init systems and Enlightenment is very much developed and geared to work with systemd (you can ask the Enlightenment developer himself on #e IRC channel... he's no fan of sysvinit). Systemd is also better geared to handle mitigating some of these backlight issues in general. If you insist on sysvinit then Enlightenment is not a good choice. I personally have no idea what all the fuss is about systemd vs. sysvinit but if you have reasons to not like systemd Enlightenment is probably not for you..

I maintain an MX Respin built with Enlightenment, if you want to have systemd boot all Desktop Environments by default you can set this with MX Tools-->Boot Options

@Charlie Brown

Hmmm, perhaps we can conclude that the 'Don't fade backlight' setting is not a magic bullet for all sysvinit cases..?

So now I know why systemd was a boot option with enlightenment. It was presented as an option from a snapshot image I made in MX, and now I know why. I guess I will remake the image without enlightenment. Thanks for the tip. I have no issue with systemd I don't know enough about it to have an opinion one way or another.

Well not exactly... Regardless of Desktop Environment or Window Manager MX Linux natively comes with the ability to boot either sysvinit or systemd, Enlightenment did not add or install systemd, it was already there. If you remove Enlightenment completely you will still have systemd on your system and will still be able to choose how you want to boot.

I don't want to remove systemd, just enlightenment. I was just fiddling with it. Like I said, I don't know enough to have strong opinions on systemd, I suppose antix would be for me if I did.
