Best machine, and Intel or AMD?
Best machine, and Intel or AMD?
Hello,
My budget ... I would consider spending up to nine hundred dollars, maybe a bit more, this time Chess would not be decisive in the requirement.
I think that over the years I have learned that a good general construction of the machine is imposed, and it is preferable to spend a little more, but what would be the best machine for me in this range ...?.
And I still to solve the 'Intel vs AMD' issue, which decision to make taking into account these factors?
I look at machines like these and I don't know what decision to take:
https://www.amazon.com/-/es/Lenovo-Idea ... r_1_9?th=1
https://www.amazon.com/-/es/gp/product/ ... fined&th=1
If you could give me some examples to find in the loptops market, Amazon, it would be of great help.
Thanks you,
Best regard.

Re: Best machine, and Intel or AMD?
I would advise against buying an Ideapad as their build quality is suspect, at least in terms of the ones that I have worked on. I suggest that you look at Acer, Asus, or HP instead.
Right now, the AMD Ryzens are running rings around Intel's offerings. That may change in a few years when Intel's new fabrication facility opens in Arizona.
As I said in your last search, if Amazon has the lowest price buy from them, but first go to a big box store like Staples or Best Buy and try the laptops out. Keyboard feel and design can make or break a laptop. For instance, when I was researching before I settled on my HP 15, I looked at an Acer that lacked a dedicated Delete key.

Re: Best machine, and Intel or AMD?
I'll add that if you intend to dual boot with Windows 11. look for a laptop that has at least 16 GB ram. Windows 11 machines with only 8 GB ram get slow in a hurry.

I can't advise you on that model because it's not marketed in Canada (where I live).keos wrote: Thu Mar 21, 2024 2:02 pm Just that ´ideapad´ or Lenovo en general, what about this?: https://www.amazon.com/-/es/gp/product/B0CK9FQXWR/
Edited to add that Lenovo's Thinkpad and Thinkbook lines are very good, but pricey.

Re: Best machine, and Intel or AMD?
I will second all those who say that Lenovo Thinkpads & Thinkbooks are great machines, and yes, top end pricey. I have an 8yo Thinkpad T560, both batteries are still punching well above their weight, 88% of their original capacity for the internal and 84% for the external.
Acer Travelmate P Series 214 through to 216 (Business class machines) are also a good choice, nice and smooth running, option to add a 2nd internal SSD either NVME or SATA3, The backlit keyboards don't have the same feel as the Lenovo, but good enough for everyday use and their touchpads are some of the better ones I've tried recently. I have always found that Acer batteries are only good for about 2 years before requiring replacement, but that is a trivial thing to do. In order to extend the battery runtime and lifespan, I set the PM to hibernate when the lid is closed instead of sleeping. They are nice and light, and usually very inexpensive compared to other brands with the same level of hardware, so a good choice for those like me who are on a slight budget. They have a good number of ports too, a big plus because no extra replicators are required.
One last thing. I advise all Linux users to keep a mile away from machines with nvidia graphics. Their drivers are just dog awful and always create problems down the track.

Re: Best machine, and Intel or AMD?
I've been out of the game way too long. Back in the day when I was building machines (both cheap and higher end), nVidia was the way to go. That said, when I finally gave up on M11 and then Mint KDE (before MX KDE was offered) and went to MX-KDE 19 on this old rig, I just stayed with the default nouveau driver and it's been just fine for my needs.m_pav wrote: Thu Mar 21, 2024 3:03 pm

I can't make a decision on which of these brands, as you know I'm inexperienced, and I've always heard negative things about some of them ... and about NIVIDIA, but I've never heard anything negative or wrong about Lenovo.

Re: Best machine, and Intel or AMD?
I can only find one isolated recent case, regarding installation problems concerning the keyboard, in Fedora, the user could not resolve the issue:
https://forums.opensuse.org/t/installat ... 20u/169912
Instead in the same thread someone comments:
"I have the same laptop. It worked fine for a long time with every Linux distro I tried on it."
As you rightly say, it's very recent ...
"The Lenovo V15 is a business class laptop Line that was introduced this year and only time will tell If they deserve to be business class."
I hope that the history of the brand, its record in functionality will serve as a guarantee, if not already as business class, at least for private use ...
I am not an expert, I have no choice but to rely on the good name ...
Thanks for your comments.
