MX23 - Printer=Good but Screensaver=BAD

#1 Post by TenderFoot »

Firstly, I was amazed and pleased to find that my Wifi printer (Canon TS5100) had been automatically discoered and installed. Are the drivers built in to the system or is it using the Cloud?

But, up until MX23, MX has been a joy and recommended to friends. However MX23 has been a nightmare - especially the "Screensaver". Once it kicks in one is **ackered! Moving the mouse or hitting a key doesn't kill it and have to resort to Ctrl+Alt+BkSp which kills any ongoing processes and takes me back to the login screen.

This is particularly unsatisfactory when one is creating a snapshot which is the first thing I do after updating a new install.

I've tried purging it, as suggested in my previous post, but to no avail.

I suppose I could waggle the mouse every few minutes but that is hardly satisfactory or perhaps I should have set the time to a million years (in minutes)!

Just out of interest, I checked MX19 where the Screensaver is disabled but that still blanks the screen after a few minutes but at least a key press/ mouse wiggle restores the session.

It sounds like you have already been told this, but I have found the trick is to uninstall the xfce4-screensaver which is extremely problematic.

And then install xscreensaver and xscreensaver-data from PX Package Installer.

Once the xscreensaver is on board, then you can turn off the screen, or run the saver, etc.. and it works. (and moving mouse or hitting a key always brings it out properly.

xfce4-screensaver has already been purged - and shows as not installed in Synaptic - so something else is blanking (and locking) the screen?

Most likely that would be the Power Manager.

you have a couple of choices:
1) Install xscreensaver and let it handle your blanking, screens, etc (or some other screen server )
2) Change the way Power Manager works in its config
__ Power Manager and then on the Display tab, turn of the "Blank After" or turn off the entire Display Power Management. there.

Last few times I used Xscreensaver I found it to be resource hungry, might just give it another run see what happens this time , thanks for the reminder CharlesV.

I have already turned it off under Power Manager > Display; So what is blanking/locking the screen?

Is it Bug or a Feature?

I can't believe that no one else has this problem. It has never been an issue on previous versions.

Just to add insult to injury, my first attempt at posting this reply failed because the Forum had logged me off!!!

But we still don't have the QSI (neither on the other thread) so, all we can do is "guess".
