Can't Wake MX Linux Up

Posted: Sun Mar 03, 2024 2:17 pm

New to MX Linux but liking it so far!
I tried different sleep/hibernate options and all with the same result which is having to power off the PC and restart.
I have another distro installed on another drive and it does wake up (I have a wireless mouse and keyboard).

Thx for any help!

I'd say that's the reason and you needed a workaround to keep the usb ports awake (like creating a rules file) ...

However:

Probably (I guess) that one is systemd , so have you tried what happens if you boot MX with systemd ? ("Advanced options" on Grub)

I'm on a desktop computer and whenever I suspend/hibernate the system, I press the power button (not hold) and my desktop comes back up. It doesn't go through the boot up process.

Yep, it's so on this "laptop", too, though pressing the power button is set to "shutdown" in "Power Manager", so, just a short press is ok :)

Try installing another kernel. For instance, on my own set-up, (also with wireless mouse and keyboard), resuming from sleep/suspend using the 6.1.0-13-rt-amd64 kernel works fine, but using the 6.4.0-1 kernel fails to wake-up the screen.

Thx for the replies!

Things I've tried...
Quick push of the power button,
Changed kernels from 6.1 to 6.5,
Selected systemd at boot,

The other distro I'm using where it does wake up is Mint 21.3 Cinnamon.

The Power Management options are a little different from what I've seen before.
What boxes should I check if I want the PC to suspend after 15 minutes (display off) and be able to wake back up with the keyboard or mouse?

Thx!

What I would do. Hit the checkbox to set time and adjust time.
Hit the go into into hibernate after being asleep checkbox.
Hit the Button checkbox and pick what I want from the drop down menu,

Like others mentioned. Mine wakes up using quick power press, Icewm in antiX 23.1 runit on this lenovo T570 laptop.
I have 3 gig of swap file and 4 gigs of ram.

If it still don't work. I would untick the hibernate entry and try again.

In the meantime this one is not a real QSI as it's edited, we even know nothing related to swap. Disk , Partition and Swap info were deleted.

Tried the above but no go.
My PC turns off after the time chosen and one quick push on the power button starts it but get "no signal on HDMI 1" on the monitor.
I also can awaken the PC by pressing the space bar on the keyboard.
we even know nothing related to swap. Disk , Partition and Swap info were deleted.
I have a lot of drives/partitions and didn't think that info would be relevant but I chose the Swap file option during installation.

So, it seems to be something about HDMI (not the pc) not waking up. We can try workarounds but they'll still be workarounds (when it works ootb with "Cinnamon" ) .

In the meantime it may also be something about this:

Graphics:
Device-1: NVIDIA GA104 [GeForce RTX 3060 Ti GDDR6X] vendor: ASUSTeK driver: nouveau v: kernel
...
loaded: modesetting ...

API: OpenGL v: 4.5 Mesa 23.1.2-1~mx23ahs renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 15.0.6 256 bits) direct-render: Yes

Normally it's NVA... (when it's Nouveau)

So, have you tried installing Nvidia driver? It's just 1-2 clicks with "Nvidia Driver Installer" from menu.

I updated the Nvidia driver but same result. I tried Hybrid Sleep also.
Using the option of "Lock Screen" instead of Sleep does work though.

In fact that's one of the reasons we always ask for the full QSI.

"Hibernation" won't work (cause it needs to resume from "disk" ). Hybrid sleep also uses either ram and disk. However :

type: file size: 8 GiB ... file: /swap/swap

It won't know where to resume from (unless there is a resume file) as you don't have any resume (and resume_offset) boot parameters.

So, you can/need to use just "suspend".

Would a wired keyboard help resume from sleep/suspend?

Yep.

(... from "suspend" only in this case, cause that you can't use the hibernation currently is not related to keyboard etc. You just need to do the adjustments for that. Actually there's a checkbox during installation like "I want to use/enable hibernation", it seems you just left it unchecked, however it's possible to enable it later, which's another subject)

Tried a wired keyboard today and it wakes up fine using it.
So is it a wireless USB and or GPU issue that's preventing suspend to wake up using a wireless keyboard?

EDIT: Well the next 2 times it didn't wake up using the wired keyboard

But... was/is it the pc that doesn't start working or just the screen ? (with the wired kb)

Also, what if you suspend with this one and then wake it up?

Code: Select all

sudo pm-suspend
(The screen won't be locked, that's normal)

Just the screen with a message of "no input".

Code: Select all

sudo pm-suspend
Same result.

Ok, then it's absolutely :
Charlie Brown wrote: Tue Mar 05, 2024 3:07 pm seems to be something about HDMI (not the pc) not waking up. We can try workarounds but they'll still be workarounds (when it works ootb with "Cinnamon" ) .

In the meantime, that it uses 144 Hz might be causing that ( maybe 50 - 60 would work).. whatever:
  • Code: Select all

    #!/bin/bash

    PATH=/sbin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin

    case "$1" in
      thaw|resume)
        xrandr --output HDMI-1 --off ; sleep 1 ; xrandr --output HDMI-1 --primary --mode 2560x1440 --rate 144
        ;;
    esac
  • Code: Select all

    sudo chmod +x /etc/pm/sleep.d/99-hdmi
Even no need to reboot. Suspend any way you like, then wake it up (any way / any kb you like)

I tried different Refresh rates (100 & 60) but didn't work.

Ran those commands but still unable to wake from suspend..

Sometimes first turning all of them off is required, so :

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/pm/sleep.d/99-hdmi
Just change "that line" to :

Code: Select all

xrandr --output DP-1 --off --output DP-2 --off --output DP-3 --off --output HDMI-1 --off ; sleep 2 ; xrandr --output HDMI-1 --primary --mode 2560x1440 --rate 144 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal
Save (Ctrl+S) , close (Ctrl+X)

Suspend ...

I changed that line but still not waking up the PC.

I just wonder what would happen if you try the Xfce release (regular MX or AHS). Just live session would be enough, no need to install.

If the other distro was also KDE I'd say ok, but the Xwayland + HDMI might be causing these.

Display: x11 server: X.Org v: 1.21.1.7 with: Xwayland v: 22.1.9

Tried Xfce but couldn't get the PC to Suspend, just a blank screen when it goes into Suspend and can't get back out of it.

What about after this?

Code: Select all

sudo apt purge xfce4-screensaver -y
( You ask why the screensaver etc? Long story :D )

The xfce4-screensaver (yes, sadly there ootb) is known to be causing such freezing issues (or black screen just with the pointer) since a long time (since MX-19 Beta). Get rid of it:

Code: Select all

sudo apt purge xfce4-screensaver -y

If you want something to lock the screen this will do it at one go:

Code: Select all

sudo apt purge xfce4-screensaver -y ; sudo apt update ; sudo apt install light-locker -y

I tried different sleep/hibernate options and all with the same result which is having to power off the PC and restart.
I have another distro installed on another drive and it does wake up (I have a wireless mouse and keyboard).

Thx for any help!

Nope, this one is absolutely an HDMI issue.

@blumx Have you tried (at least to see what happens, though this would be annoying to do each time):

  • Unplug and replug the HDMI cable
or
  • Switch to another tty then come back ( say: Ctrl+Alt+F1 then Ctrl+Alt+F7 , or Ctrl+Alt+F1 then Alt+(left) Arrow )

P.S. Though it wakes up with the other distro: Have a look if the monitor itself has a powersave setting (or so), if yes, disable that and try.

I have a similar problem that happens on some nvidia driver versions. Going to a virtual terminal puts the monitors to sleep. Was fine with the last version but with the latest one from the nvidia repo it came back.

So maybe this is a driver issue? Try the legacy diver instead of current.

Nvidia hates linux what can I say.

Hi, back after a long absence. Just tried unplugging and plugging in the HDMI cable but no change.

Not sure what a tty is? EDIT: Figured that out but the keyboard isn't operational after it suspends/sleeps.
P.S. Though it wakes up with the other distro: Have a look if the monitor itself has a powersave setting (or so), if yes, disable that and try.
Checked that out (I have an ASUS 32" 1440P HDR Curved Monitor (VG32VQ) - QHD (2560 x 1440), 144Hz,) but no power saving setting.
