Thanks for noting my guide, MX Linux to Windows and Mac File Sharingnathan2423 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 29, 2024 6:30 am Following @FullScale4Me's excellent guide I have figured this out -- I had not fixed my firewall for samba! Please delete -- thanks!
Common Share Setup Fail Points
Points below are however the most common issues brought up on the MX Support Forum.
1) Do NOT modify the file /etc/samba/smb.conf in any way. Use MX Samba Config.1
2) Don't use spaces in Samba share paths. Use – or _ instead.
3) All PCs should be on the same network sub-net.
4) The shared folder must be in the sharing user's users home folder.
5) Leave the Unix permissions alone. The +x IS needed from root to share folder
I wish to share a folder that is mounted (in my case as /mnt/drived) but the Mix samba config tool gives error to the effect that there are improper characters in the share name.
I presume that item 4 in this list is there for a reason, but it's not clear to me what the reason is, so: Is it possible to share folders that are outside the user's home folder, or should I give up on that idea as a non-starter?
FWIW it is in a continual state of improvement, unlike a paper book's once-and-done. I modified one point (4) and added one (5).

1 Yes, there are a lot of guides saying to do so. MX Linux made the MX Samba Config tool to make it easier.
