I'm 4 Years-Old Today!!!

Here you can post about what you did to get MX to work right with your computer or if hardware worked right out of the box for you. This is for the computers and/or hardware that is normally hard to get working right in Linux or MX.

I'm 4 Years-Old Today!!!

[Sing to the tune of "Happy Birthday"]:
Happy Birthday to Me...Happy Birthday to Me...
Happy Birthday to Me.........
Happy Birthday to Me!!!

:party5:

Today is my official MX-Linux "creation date".

In anticipation of Windows 7's End of Life on January 14, 2020 (last update), I started investigating Linux (in general) in early 2019. I had made this decision because I couldn't get Windows 10 to finish updates on a cheap-o Notebook with eMMC storage (32GB, which was really about 28GB). I also was frustrated with how long the Windows updates would take, and when they would happen!

Anyway...A bit of History:

I was brought-up on the CLI (first PC was 1981) with DOS; learned some BASIC in High School; learned Unix and some programming (Assembly Language, C, Pascal) in college, and still have a collection of some 5.25" (real) floppies (as opposed to the non-floppy 1.4MB "floppy"). Anyway, the point is that I started-out using CLI and Unix.

Then came Windows, which I ended-up using for 30 years. Even though I started-out with CLI and Unix, and took programming courses in college (vague memories of the computer lab, VMS, terminals, the Jove editor, Vi (?), etc.), after 30 years of using Windows, I was trepidatious, at best, to switch-over to Linux. So, I gave it about a year to research, prepare and dive-in.

I was lucky enough to have a bunch of discarded desktop PCs and Laptops, which I could play with.

I tried-out Mint, and a few other distros, until I discovered MX (probably from DistroWatch).

IIRC, the install process was easy-as-pie (MX-19?), and I had a full-functioning computer in under 15 minutes! Updates were lightning-fast, and there was even a Forum to ask for help!!!!

I have not needed Windows once in the past 4 years! I do keep some PCs with Windows 7 dual-boot with MX-Linux (on Windows, Internet is disabled), because I still like the occasional DOOM game (yeah, I know you can get it for Linux), and I thought I would need Windows for iTunes (Apple Music now?) to get some podcasts on an old iPod Classic and Nano. I actually upgraded a few years-ago to an iPod "Touch", which can download my podcasts wirelessly. So, no need for Windows! Better than that, I now get all my podcasts via Clementine (which searches iTunes, RSS feeds, etc.).

Over the last 4 years I have discovered and learned SO much from the MX-Forum.

More importantly, I have been helped, at EVERY turn, by the Developers, Admins, Guides (is that still a thing?), and Forum members :exclamation: :celebrate:

Without going into too much detail, the Forum has helped me out of some tricky spots: GRUB install for multiple distros on one machine, EFI multi-boot, encrypted snapshot installs, Wake-on-Lan, VirtualBox issues, etc., etc., etc.

I remain astounded that the MX Developers themselves are some of the first to respond to Forum Members' issues, and quickly, at that!!!!

So, yeah, one VERY HAPPY (MX) CAMPER :spinning: :celebrate:

Thank you all for your hard labor, dedication, enthusiasm, and patience in helping the MX user!!!

I would encourage other users and members of MX to find some way to contribute to this "Most Excellent" Distro! It doesn't have to be monetary; you can contribute to: translation, documentation, user-groups on other platforms, helping users on the MX Forum, etc.

So, a heart-felt "Thank You" to Team MX:

:yourock: :dancingman: :band:

*MXPI = MX Package Installer
*Please check the solved checkbox on the post that solved it.

Happy Birthday!

I can relate to the story. Same but different. It's good to read that others have had similar ways before, and similar success with MX. I was not sure if it will work and last a few weeks - saying this nearly 2 years later.

@dings:

Thanks, Dude!

Good on You!

I forgot to add in the original post that I have MX-23.1, Xfce running on that eMMC Tablet PC, with absolutely NO problem!!!!

I found that Tablet PC in a recycling bin, presumably because Windows 10 (which was loaded on it by the manufacturer) would not or could not upgrade on it. My guess is that there was not the required 25GB free/available for Windows update/upgrade!!! Google it. Anyway...it took a bit of doing to bypass the (once again) Windows "Secure Boot" by pointing the UEFI to a Linux image on USB. I was finally able to navigate the nested menus/prompts to have it point to the correct GRUB file.

Just reviewing my notes on how I was able to do all this (originally succeeded on 31/12/2019, and updated my notes on 16/3/2020-- I'm using the European dating format). Anyway...it turned-out to be quite tricky, with "Erase all Secure Boot Settings", then, "Select" a "trusted/secure" UEFI file to load, which for me was: "EMMC" -> "<EFI>" -> "<MX19>" -> "grub64.efi" -> "GRUB", where the arrows are what comes after pressing "Enter" at each prompt where I entered the above info.

Anyway...it just took a while to play with the CRAZY "Security" settings on this Notepad, which I documented with 13 steps, and more notes at the end. Here are the deets for this model:

Acer-Aspire ES1-131 Tablet PC

Oops, MY BAD! I just realized that I had been referring to this little computer as a "Notepad".

Nope, it's a "Tablet PC", with eMMC only storage (basically 32GB flash drive, soldered onto the motherboard, leaving about 25GB free). The problem with Windows (10 & up) is that after Windows 10 was pre-installed on the machine, there was very little room left on the drive (10GB?).

I read on various forums that Windows 10 needs at least 25GB free for its major, in-place, Feature Updates.

I also read on-line that this is why these little Tablet PCs (Windows' alternative to the Chrome Book) were discarded by many folks.

I thought that there's got to be a way to get MX on the thing, and why put a perfectly good computer on the trash heap?

Once again, thank you Linux, and MX-Linux, in particular :exclamation:

This little Tablet PC is perfect for travel-- very small and lightweight, and now works perfectly with MX!
