Dear forum members,
I downloaded the MX-23.1_rpi_respin. The sha 256 check was ok. I copied the image to a 16GB micro SD card via dd. After inserting the card into the slot on my Raspberrypi 4B-rev 1.1 and powering up, I got a "kernel panic" message on a black background..:

1.1.658103 Failed to execute /init (error -2) 1.1.658791 Kernel panic - not syncing: No working init found. Try passing init=option
to kernel. See Linux Documentation/admin-guide/init.rst forguidance. 1. 1.658917 CPU: 3PID: 1 Comm: swapper/0 Not tainted

The PI-OS and other distros have run on this Pi before. I have experience with setting up SD cards and installing OS on Raspberrys since 2016.

What has gone wrong? What can I do?

Thanks for your help!

I would check the output of blkid and make sure the PARTUUID for the root partition matches what is in the bootfs/cmdline.txt

Yo',
I had the same type of error - couldn't find the file anywhere. - I did use the 'dd' method.
'
I ended up solving this by using the official 'rpi-imager' program from the Raspberry site.
as it wasn't available via 'apt'. You will need to go to the bottom of the list for the 'OS to load' window
and select custom -- I loaded the *.img file that was 'unzipped' from the MX download.
'
Don't get alarmed , there are a few blackscreens during the install.
rPi4 with 4G, used a 32G microSD - it automatically expanded it (unless rpi-imager did it?)

FWIW: "Imager" (rpi-imager) is installed by default and launched with the menu
