Starting OpenArena causes my screen to spazz out.

#1 Post by gbhollr »

I installed OpenArena but whenever I try to start it,
my screen just fuzzes out like this.
Image

If it helps, here's my machine info
I'm using systemd and an extra monitor by the way.

First run this in a terminal. Just type out openarena. Reason, most the time spits out error messages and you know what is really wrong.

Guessing 3D Acceleration to run needed for your video card or missing dependencies. Here are the required dependencies.

SDL

openal

curl

libvorbis

Your lack of a swap partition is cause for concern. There are a lot of folks touting the idea that with enough ram available you can forgo creating a swap partition or file, but the reality is that some applications still expect it to be there (even though it may never be used) and can give unpridictable results when swap space is not present. The good news is that you can add a swap file at any time and here’s how:

https://www.digitalocean.com/community/ ... -debian-11
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Hey. I tried opening the game from the terminal.
I still got the glitchy screen but here's what I got.

Hey @j2mcgreg

I just tried out adding the Swap file.
Unfortunately, it didn't help fix the problem.
Opening OpenArena still causes the monitor to glitch out!

Does it just affect the external monitor or is the laptop screen affected as well?
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

It just affects the external monitor.
Anyway, I just uninstalled OpenArena and am installing the Flatpak version to see if that works any better.

So I installed the flatpak version of OpenArena (Quake3e) but it only shows up on my laptop monitor
and not my external one (which I set to be my primary display). Any thoughts?

Display1=Laptop Monitor
Display2=External Monitor
In Display turn off your Laptop monitor, make sure that Display2 is Primary
Close Application

activate Open Arena.
close Open Arena.

open Display turn on your Display1, making Display2 as Primary

activate Open Arena
#other options are to go through all the video settings in Open Arena too.
click "Setup"
then click "System"

This will bring you to a section with
Graphics options
Display options
Sound options and
Network options

PS Under "Setup" "Graphics" then "Fullscreen" ON turn to OFF and the game will display as a Regular Desktop Application.
