Laptop not booting

#1 Post by subzero74 »

Hi!
I installed MX 23.1 on a new laptop Umax N14G, then restarted and now it does not boot, no post massages, no picture, cant even go to bios, power led is on. Factory Win10 worked fine before MX install. What could go wrong?

Does it still boot with the live usb you installed? (You can check files and folders and partitions at least. Or if it seems they're ok, you can try Boot Rescue Menus: "Grub Bootloader" and "Grub Menus" ...)

That it doesn't enter Bios is weird.

I suggest that you reinstall Win 10 so that you can disable Secure Boot and Fast Start Up. Then try your MX install again. Also note that if you are using Ventoy to create your USB install drive, you must upgrade Ventoy to its latest edition since the earlier versions are incompatible with MX 23.

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

I used ventoy about a month old, is that a problem? I cant install anything, nothing comes on the screen on booting. Maybe if somehow manage to reset bios but its a new laptop?

Yes, that's what you need and the issue is not MX / Linux specific.

Though this may not work on newer pcs:

If the battery is removable: Remove that (and also unplug the adapter) Then press the power button and hold it for 10 - 20 sec. (or more / again if you can, (to drain the last electricity)). Then put the battery etc. back, restart.

... Then you can try it when it's completely discharged ... (At least not to open the case and void the warranty ... )

When you say MX 23 was installed on the machine, does that mean you were at first able to boot the Live Session of MX 23?
MXPI = MX Package Installer
QSI = Quick System Info from menu
The MX Test repository is mostly backports; not the same as Debian testing

Sounds to me like it's a hardware fault. In my experience (+50 yrs) , if electronics are going to fail they do it within the first 10 power on hours or after 5 years.
Just Murphy's law that it happened after an OS reload. Sudden death is a co-incidence.
