Do I need to do a remaster before installing from a persistent stick

If you do not opt to boot into the persistence, you'll get the vanilla MX version you originally used to make the live media when you run the installer. If you boot into persistence, the changes from the persistence will be overlayed on the install and carry on to the freshly installed machine. Note, your usual user setup choices may be omitted by the installer. It's been a while since I did that last so I may be mistaken, or it may have changed since then.
If you wish to lock the changes into the base image on the persistent media, then you remaster the Live USB, though if you're using root persistence or combined root/home, you may have to clean up any left-over root persistence files that have been orphaned as a result of remastering and create a new one using the options in the live remaster.

Thank you very much, I will experiment with the options and get back if necessary. I don't have any experience with remasters yet
