Evolution MX-23.1 No Longer Launches After MX Update

#1 Post by VitalM »

I have 3 PCs with MX-23.1 installed in them (This laptop Dell Inspiron E1505, another laptop Dell Inspiron E1501 and a desktop Dell Dimension E310). The Evolution Mail suite application has been working fine from the moment I installed MX-23.1 and throughout all MX updates, which I stop updating for about a month and a half.

However, today, after performing the MX updates on my 3 PCs, I noticed that the Evolution Mail app no longer lunches on my 2 laptops, yet it runs perfectly on my desktop PC.

What can I do to make them run on my 2 laptops?

Here is my Dell Inspiron E1505 QSI

Re: Evolution MX-23.1 No Longer Launches After MX Update

start from terminal and post any output.

also it might not hurt to make sure updates are actually complete, especially if you haven't updated in a long time

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg --configure -a
should exit with no output if there is nothing half-updated or installed.

Thank you dolphin_oracle for your prompt reply.

I ran the code "sudo dpkg --configure -a" in terminal and exited without any outputs.

I don't know exactly how to start the Evolution program from terminal. I found an article indicating that you simply type the name of the application and press enter. However, when I typed Evolution in terminal I got the following output, which I don't understand:

VitalMiranda@mx-Inspiron-1501:~
$ Evolution
Command 'Evolution' not found, did you mean:
command 'evolution' from deb evolution
Try: sudo apt install <deb name>

Can you help me out here?

Thank you,

Thanks you Charles and dolphin_oracle.

I was able to run the Evolution application from Terminal in my Dell Inspiron 1501 by using the command "evolution %U", which I got from "Edit Launcher" that resulted from right clicking the Evolution icon listed in the Application Menu and selecting "Edit Application...", from which I got the following output:

VitalMiranda@mx-Inspiron-1501:~
$ evolution %U

(evolution:4344): evolution-shell-WARNING **: 18:10:18.714: Cannot import any of the given URIs

Despite the error/warning above, it appears that the above command launched the application successfully, but in the background only because I can see notification messages popping up indicating that I received e-mails, etc. However, I cannot see the actual application.

What should I do next to fix this issue?

Thank you,

Your welcome, and I get the exact same result from a terminal.

Try launching now using the menu selection, like regular now.

Thank you Charles,

I tried to run the application regularly from the Application Menu, but nothing happened.

However, I also ran the Evolution application from Terminal by using just the command "evolution", which yielded a completely different outcome as follows:

VitalMiranda@mx-Inspiron-1501:~
$ evolution
libEGL warning: failed to get driver name for fd -1

libEGL warning: MESA-LOADER: failed to retrieve device information

libEGL warning: failed to get driver name for fd -1

(evolution:6295): Gdk-WARNING **: 19:17:13.326: The program 'evolution' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'GLXBadFBConfig'.
(Details: serial 225 error_code 170 request_code 152 (GLX) minor_code 0)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the GDK_SYNCHRONIZE environment
variable to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
VitalMiranda@mx-Inspiron-1501:~
$

Please advise on how to proceed.

Thank you

I am going to suggest running MX cleanup and making sure two things are set:
under Clean Folders - make sure All is selected.

under Clear APT cache - make sure All files is selected.

Then click on apply. Reboot and then try to launch evolution from your menu again.
