install RStudio in MX Linux 23 unmet dependencies

#1 Post by mega »

I try to install RStudio. The step in : https://www.earthdatascience.org/course ... r-rstudio/. The step is to install r-base for the first. Then I download RStudio for debian. But, unfortunately, there is no RStudo for Debian Bookworm. So, I download for Debian Bullseye. I download in : https://posit.co/download/rstudio-desktop/.
Then I install. Then get error :

$ sudo apt install -f ./rstudio-2023.06.2-561-amd64.deb
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Reading state information... Done
Note, selecting 'rstudio' instead of './rstudio-2023.06.2-561-amd64.deb'
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
rstudio : Depends: libssl1.0.0 but it is not installable or
libssl1.0.2 but it is not installable or
libssl1.1 but it is not installable
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

So, how the solution ?

It looks like the main repos don't have "libssl1" but "libssl3" I think libssl1 is still maintained as "1.1.1v" or something.
This will be tricky, it may involve adding repos for one that has it, or you could compile your own libssl1 from https://www.openssl.org/source/openssl-1.1.1v.tar.gz. :crossfingers:

compile by my own self will be hard for me.
but, I decide to just use R because I succeed when installing r-base.
I will use RStudio when RStudio can be installed easily without compiling.
anyway thank you for your advice

I keep a copy of RStudio on a Live USB I created from a snapshot. I didn't see the point of keeping it installed because the first and only time I've ever had to use it on my own machine was in 2007. I've upgraded it twice since then, once with MX17 and again with MX19. I find Open source tools do most of all I need nowadays.

R is open-source--see Wikipedia for license if dubious. It is used preferentially by many researchers (including my son the climate scientist) and data-miners for a whole raft of reasons, including the ease with which its calculations can be easily published and thus increase the replicability of any results.

Ahh, I see, I got it confused with R-Studio data recovery, so I lost the hyphen :duh:

I had started thinking that I had confused the two of them, whew.

@FinalFox420 You should make a MX-23 package request and see if the missing items can be backported or something.

I would ask the developers of the proprietary RStudio to rebuild their debs on a Bookworm base. It wouldn't be that hard for them, I'd guess.
MXPI = MX Package Installer
QSI = Quick System Info from menu
The MX Test repository is mostly backports; not the same as Debian testing

Downloaded the tarball. It looks to be open source.

This is the README.md

Code: Select all

RStudio
=============================================================================

RStudio is an integrated development environment (IDE) for the
[R programming language](http://www.r-project.org). Some of its
features include:

- Customizable workbench with all of the tools required to work with R in one
place (console, source, plots, workspace, help, history, etc.).
- Syntax highlighting editor with code completion.
- Execute code directly from the source editor (line, selection, or file).
- Full support for authoring Sweave and TeX documents.
- Runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux, and has a community-maintained
  [FreeBSD port](https://www.freshports.org/devel/RStudio/).
- Can also be run as a server, enabling multiple users to access the RStudio
  IDE using a web browser.

For more information on RStudio please visit the
[project website](http://www.posit.co/).

Getting the Code
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

RStudio is licensed under the AGPLv3, the terms of which are included in
the file COPYING. You can find our source code repository on GitHub at [https://github.com/rstudio/rstudio](https://github.com/rstudio/rstudio).

Documentation
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

For information on how to use RStudio check out our
[online documentation](http://www.rstudio.com/ide/docs/).

For documentation on running your own RStudio Server see the
[server getting started](http://www.rstudio.com/ide/docs/server/getting_started)
guide.

See also the following files included with the distribution:

- COPYING - RStudio license (AGPLv3)
- NOTICE - Additional open source software included with RStudio
- SOURCE - How to obtain the source code for RStudio
- INSTALL - How to build and install RStudio from source

If you have problems or want to share feedback with us please visit our
[community forum](https://community.rstudio.com/c/rstudio-ide). For other
inquiries you can also email us at [info@posit.co](mailto:info@posit.co).
Fedora, AUR and a few others have it in their repos, though I don't see a debian type package.

I had R installed in my backup image from 6 days ago. Thought wrong I guess whatever. At least I fixed my apt errors. Removed whatever R was and still have no idea how I missed it or even why it was installed to begin with. Forget what I said before. I assume this may be a libretto thing, no idea as usual.
