hello

i use a large LCD monitor connected to my laptop. i turn this laptop on and close the lid. i run a frugal install of mx/21.3. however, the initial boot messages are all on the laptop and i cant see them with the lid closed. i see messages on the monitor only when udev? gets populated and just when X is about to start. can all messages right from the GRUB menu be on the monitor?

It may be related to hdmi , have you tried any other type of connection (maybe DVI) ?

On this very old HP (mine) I had even dismantled the lid (was broken) and been using like a desktop with vga & lcd ... all boot text etc. are on lcd like the original monitor...

Also don't forget to play with Fn key(s) to switch display output (on mine Fn+F4) .. press 2-3 times to switch modes... so, "external monitor only", or "both", may make it work as you wanted...

thanks for the ideas, i got an HP too and in my case i had removed the back cover and cleaned the gunk on the CPU fan which was heating it up so much it used to power off itself. now it does that no more. however, i cant quite get the back cover on again so i upgraded the RAM which is nice and im able to run mx all in RAM using a frugal setup as indicated above.

so hah, i had no joy doing this. yeah its a hdmi connection, cant DVI as there is no DVI output.

I'd bet if you can turn it on without opening the lid it would default to displaying on an external monitor. Most (all?) laptops can be configured to startup on application of AC power (I.e. unplug and replug the AC adapter), or possibly a key/mouse press from a keyboard/mouse. You might need to search for and enable these in the BIOS.

Also, a docking station might also have an external power button. It might require the one made for your laptop to work though, so options might be limited, and that's if you laptop will accept one.
