Wallpaper shuffle periodically freezing

#1 Post by TinyCritter »

Hi :) I noticed after getting close to around 400 different wallpapers / desktop backgrounds (I have about 450 right now), that the [Desktop Settings] --> [Wallpaper for Workspace 1] --> [Change the background] --> [Random order] (in this case every ~60 seconds) ... is freezing (remaining stuck on one particular background/wallpaper) every 20 or so shuffles.

Is there a workaround for this, or maybe a different wallpaper manager that could do the trick? I think it might have something to do with there simply being too many backgrounds to select from, which is causing selection/retrieval errors due to them not loading in memory fast enough or something.

I'm wondering if it's freezing on one particular wallpaper, or a random one.
But Variety is very nice!
MXPI = MX Package Installer
QSI = Quick System Info from menu
The MX Test repository is mostly backports; not the same as Debian testing

We need your computer’s complete profile before we can proceed, so you need to post the output from the QSI utility. The Quick System Info (QSI) utility is located in MX Tools and its output is automatically formatted for use here in the forum. Run the QSI utility, click “Copy for Forum” at the bottom and then just paste it here in your thread.

HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Actually, it may matter, as Stevo said, whether it is freezing on specific wallpapers or just randomly.

Some images have lots of metadata inserted into the image. I wonder if that makes a difference. I recall during testing of (I think) MX18, some metadata was causing the XFCE desktop to display certain images in portrait orientation instead of landscape .

Thanks for the replies, everyone - I switched to Variety and it works great, except for one thing, which is that every time it shuffles a wallpaper there's an intermediate "black screen blink" for a fraction of a second, rather than the seamless transitions of the base MX wallpaper shuffler. Is there a way to prevent that ('blink') from happening -- maybe in the compositor or something?
