display issue after Suspend

Hello, I did a fresh install of MX. After coming back from "suspend" mode, the display is reddish throughout and is lower resolution like an old computer. This does not go away and I have to re-start. I thought this was a swap size issue so I increased swap to 2x RAM (RAM is 6GB). Any ideas? Thank you!

I saw on the forum a reference to an "intel tweak" but can't find the tweak itself. I welcome a pointer or other suggestions on this display issue. Thanks!

It won't be there also won't work. Cause your card is AMD :

Graphics: Device-1: AMD ... driver: radeon
...
Display: ... driver: loaded: ati,radeon

Maybe clarify as to whether the display issue is hibernation or suspend.

Code: Select all

sudo make-xorg-conf radeon -o /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-radeon.conf
Reboot, try suspend then wake up.

I tried the make-xorg-conf command (and reboot) but the video issue remained after suspend...

A search of iMac7,1 v: 1.0 linux waking from suspend brings up a lot of older hits regarding this.
I don't know linux, I'm a newb, but if others of more knowledge don't eventually solve the issue, maybe try light-locker, or antix.

Or disable suspend, maybe hibernate will work!

It could be lack of kernel support for the Radeon graphics device. MX 21 used to work. Any uses with retrograding to that version?

It's already light-locker ootb.

You can install 4.19 and 6.1 kernels from "MX Package Installer" , boot with and try. (4.19 and 5.10 will be in Advanced Options on Grub menu after installation.)

I tried the other kernels but no luck. I tend to think the problem relates to memory going into swap (cache?). Any ideas on configuring? Swap size should be ok at 8GB.

Your swap is more than enough:

swap-1 type: partition size: 11.72 GiB used: 0 KiB

Memory: 5.8 GiB used: 1.84 GiB (31.7%)

We can try to create a resume file, what's the output of this?

Code: Select all

lsblk -f | grep swap
Also what happens if you suspend with this one?

Code: Select all

sudo pm-suspend

From the lsbk command I get
├─sda3 swap 1 swapMX e75c0c7f-7643-4d87-9391-0c2360e101a5 [SWAP]

Unfortunately the command line suspend also leads to the same video problem.

Appreciate the help!

arp wrote: Mon Jun 19, 2023 9:59 am... Unfortunately the command line suspend also leads to the same video problem...
Ok, at least now we know that it's not a light-locker issue.

Code: Select all

echo RESUME=UUID=e75c0c7f-7643-4d87-9391-0c2360e101a5 | sudo tee /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume ; sudo update-initramfs -uk all
Reboot.

Though this may/may not solve this issue, no harm.

Ok, then , can you still use the terminal and do 1-2 things? Though the screen looks bad...

Code: Select all

inxi -Gaz
when that happens and let's see how it looks at that moment.

This is going to sound really odd, but lower your screen res to something under that 1680 and try the suspend.

If it works ok, then you may have an issue with the driver and refresh rate on that iMac.

Here's the inix output. just after suspend (screen still bad)

This is really weird cause everything looks normal, drivers are ok and the res.. so, we can try just to turn off and on ..

When that happens try (if one doesn't work, go on with the next one):

Code: Select all

xrandr --display :0 --output LVDS --auto

Code: Select all

xrandr --output LVDS --off ; xrandr --output LVDS --auto

Code: Select all

xrandr --output LVDS --off ; sleep 1 ; xrandr --output LVDS --primary --mode 1680x1050 --rate 60

Do you mean to try these commands and then go into suspend, and see if it's normal afterwords? Or try these when the screen is not displaying properly?

Yep, just when that happens after a suspend & wake-up (to see if any of them works).

I tried these. The second and third ones causes the screen to go back briefly but came back again with the resolution problem. The first one didn't do anything noticiable...

Ok. In fact I remember a very similar one, again with radeon, again with a reddish screen etc... The verdict was that it was a hardware problem.

In this case (what we did) It turns off and turns on with the wrong resolution even when we state what it should be (the 3rd one) , and though it shows the resolution and drivers are already ok ...

Ah, ok, I was just writing this:

The only thing I would try:

Is it the same if you try any other distro on live session?

______________

However the main difference (with MX19) is the 4.19 kernel, that you already tried ... Then maybe others are affecting, mesa version etc...

Well it actually didn't work with MX19 live disk. Corrupted video just like the current version. I recall when I was installing Linux on this Mac three years ago for the first time, I had trouble with most distros. They had the suspend/wakeup issue. I was able to get MX Linux to work properly, I think by doing something with the partitions on install. But I don't remember what the trick was :(

You're welcome, I wish they worked.

Since the resolution, drivers etc. look ok when that happens, it seems the card is ok, just there's something with the monitor (it can't display correctly what the card outputs..). So, if it was an external monitor, playing with cables would work imho.
