Libre Office help - I managed to break Libre Office - Solved

#1 Post by Topher »

I was trying to tame Mail Merge in Writer. It sure seems to be picky-ticky and I was trying to do something that is a bit different than the code writers envisioned. So this was maybe my 25th time trying to get things to look like I wanted them to look. But trying to remove a data set caused it to freeze. So I used Ctrl-Alt-Esc to kill it. And now I can't get Writer or Calc or LibreOffice to start. Help

A couple of things you can try.

First, if you have not already, restart the computer and try it .

Second, rename the libreoffice folder in your .confg (or move it to a backup area) - Note, this WILL remove all of your saved settings!)

Code: Select all

mv ~/.config/libreoffice ~/.config/libreoffice_saved
Third, run MX Cleanup and make sure ~/cache is checked. ( you can uncheck the rest - or dont empty if you want.)
- Note: If you have stacer installed, I would run that and clean up the application cache area. I believe it is the same area that is cleaned by the MX Tool, but I have found that to really clear up some issues at times when MX Clean up doesnt.

And last if none of those work, then its purge libreoffice and reinstall

Rebooting worked. In 20+ years of using LO this is the first time that I sort of broke it. And on a restart it asked if I wanted to recover the file.

Libreoffice has many modules that run when started, and sometimes they get orphaned and then it wont start properly. Saw this a lot on windows, not so much in Linux.

Glad that was the fix :-)
