Early feedback:
Posting here some items in unsorted order:
* Booted Live ISO/USB wont's show updates automatically at least not the day it was released.
On the liveISO we have this last "update-stamp" file
Code: Select all
ls -l /var/lib/apt/periodic/update-stamp
w-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Apr 7 04:08 /var/lib/apt/periodic/update-stamp
which appears to have the timestamp of the build.
The MX-Updater "quick-live" update, won't run at least not today. And user may have the impression, no updates available.
Suggest to adjust build-iso to prevent this timestamp file to get onto the iso.
... later more ...

* keyboard layout indicator themeing issue:
The one which comes pre-activated in Xfce looks like this when havin more then one keyboard enabled:
keyboard-switcher.jpg
Maybe using for Xfce the build-in keyboard layout indicator/switcher could be considered,
which is in the attached picture above the volume icon:

I put the .iso on a Ventoy USB (Ventoy version 1.0.91). It got to the boot menu and after I selected the time zone and tried to boot I got:
Fatal Error
Could not find file antiX/linuxfs
I tried verify media and got the same error after.
I used the same iso to boot in VirtualBox with no problem. Then I burned it directly to another USB without Ventoy and it also booted with no problem.

Same scenario here with Ventoy (1.0.50)

Dug out a spare thumb drive and ran MX Live USB Maker and had no problems installing. I will thoroughly test it over the weekend and report any issues.

Tying Ventoy with the same kernel using MX21.3 snapshot, it show this:
Code: Select all
Welcome to MX 21.3_ahs (Wildflower) 64-bit!
Linux kernel: 6.1.0-7mx-ahs-amd64
Found overlay
Loading hardware specific modules ...
Error: insmod: can't insert '/ventoy/tool/dm_patch_64.ko': invalid parameter
Scan usb,cd devices. Look for boot file(s) antiX/linuxfs
Filtered devices /dev/mapper/ventoy /dev/sda2 /dev/sda1 /dev/sda /dev/sr0
mount -t iso9660 -o ro /dev/mapper/ventoy /live/boot-dev
Mounted boot device. Mounted device /dev/mapper/ventoy at /live/boot-dev
where this line:
Code: Select all
Error: insmod: can't insert '/ventoy/tool/dm_patch_64.ko': invalid parameter
may indicate ventoy's kernel module "injection" into the live system
seems to have some issues with newer kernel.
OTOH, this is not a ventoy thread, so let's focus on the MX-23 alpha2 related issues.
++EDIT+++
OK. as this is not a ventoy thread adding some further findings here:
Just booted with the earlier alpha1 ISO, which gives some more
hints that the issue may be related to ventoy specific adjustments/hooks
specially made for antiX based distro's like MX Linux, which is using antiX live system:

Some ramblings:
MP3 files open with VLC, not Strawberry. (Is Strawberry replacing Clementine?)
Running UIP to add software from an existing list onto a fresh install fails without sources having been updated first. (apt update?)
Is gThumb still going to be the default image viewer?
HEIF/HEIC images can't be viewed. (Needs heif-gdk-pixbuf, gdk-pixbuf loader and heif-thumbnailer to be installed.)

Maybe we add into the "User Installed Packages" (UIP) tool the same logic we have now with "MX Updater".
Which is: If last package refresh (apt update) is older then some minutes, do refresh the packages list first before performing the install of packages.

The new added package diversion of the grub config files to avoid
those unwanted questions by an grub upgrade,
do seem to create diverted files with dublicated extentions ".dpkg-dist
Code: Select all
/etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme.dpkg-dist.dpkg-dist*
/etc/grub.d/10_linux.dpkg-dist.dpkg-dist*
/etc/grub.d/20_linux_xen.dpkg-dist.dpkg-dist*
/etc/grub.d/20_memtest86+.dpkg-dist.dpkg-dist*
/etc/grub.d/30_os-prober.dpkg-dist.dpkg-dist*
/etc/grub.d/30_uefi-firmware.dpkg-dist.dpkg-dist*
/etc/grub.d/41_custom.dpkg-dist.dpkg-dist*
At least it looks a bit like something may be needed to get adjusted
