HELP with xfce window bars and buttons - MX16

Hi, just now after turning on the laptop and entering the system, my windows have no buttons and no title bar but most important I cannot move them (holding alt button doesnt work). Also cant close them, cant select them. Right click on a page/text diasspaeras when scroling in the menu to click copy.Last night, before shut down I have received an error and was a small delay, it didnt want to shut down, something about a object thing that is still active. After a small delay it turned of, and now I got this.

Also, cant switch between desktop1 and desktop2, programs arent showed in menu bar, and after loging in (user and pass) desktop wallpaper doent load, nor the icons on the desktop (it still displays the wallpaper from the log in session).

Brave browser starts in full screen mode, but other apps are smaller in width, cant maximize them.

How to fix?
Thanks

We need your computer’s complete profile before we can diagnose a problem like this, so you need to post the output from the QSI utility. The Quick System Info (QSI) utility is located in MX Tools and its output is automatically formatted for use here in the forum. Run the QSI utility, click “Copy for Forum” at the bottom and then just paste it here in your thread.

The best answer I can give you is that your problems would disappear if you just upgraded to the latest version of MX. There are no fixes available that don't involve the installation of modern software, which won't run properly with your version of MX. Your machine is certainly capable of running MX 21 and I offer, as proof, the QSI of my Aspire V5 which predates your Dell by 4 years:

If you like, these will reset the related settings to defaults:
  • press F4
  • Code: Select all

    rm ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfwm4.xml

    Code: Select all

    rm ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xsettings.xml
  • Reboot. (Or logout, login)
(Hoping there's no permissions/ownership issues)

P.S. Deliberately no sudo , no su , no root etc.

Try this command for QSI: inxi -Fxxxrza

@ Huck it did not work. But system works, except this part of windows related stuff. Perhaps another type of xfce reset?

@ Eadwine (the a from the end of cmd line wasnt recognized, so here is the output for the rest)

perhaps someone here can upload the xfce config files from home and I could overwrite mine?

or perhaps replace xfce with lxde?

Yes, of course you can install other DEs (or WMs like Openbox or Fluxbox) which are available in MXPI in that release, then login with that one (switch on login window).

Till then (and for you wanted only):
  • Code: Select all

    cp -R /etc/skel/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/
    Reboot or logout, login.
  • If still not (more radical):

    Code: Select all

    cp -R /etc/skel/.config/xfce4/ ~/.config/
    Reboot or logout, login.

In the meantime your QSI shows Desktop: N/A

Therefore it's normal. You can even reinstall Xfce.

thank you for your answer
however I cant tell whats missing from the xfce enviroment..
I havent installed/uninstalled/removed nothing
what should I look for?

I will try with other DE to see if I manage.

Later edit: I am on lxde now but when I click start menu button gives error on the screen:

Code: Select all

could'nt change the directory to " "
There is a blank between quotes there, as I wrote and I only can click ok. So the start menu does not work from the begining of the session, but works after I execute a program like firefox or something else... Weird.
I was able to start firefox by clicking a saved page. However if you can help I still would like the "before" configuration... Thanks.
