2019 Acer Swift SF314-41 fails to boot live-usb [SOLVED]

I can not produce a QSI from this machine because it cycles through booting up to loading live-init, and on the rare occasion it gets to the desktop, it freezes withing 10 seconds.

AMD Ryzen 5 3500U 4 x 2.1 - 3.7 GHz, Zen+ with AMD Radeon RX Vega 8 (Ryzen 2000/3000) Graphics
BIOS is the latest (F10) for this machine.

Full specs here --> https://www.notebookcheck.net/Acer-Swif ... 585.0.html

I want to install MX21-3 onto it for my wife to use at school with her teaching.

So far, I've tried MX-21.3 Xfce and AHS, as well as personal snapshots with upgraded kernels and a boot parameter load=all, all to no avail :frown:
This machine only boots from gpt partitioned drives and I only use MXLUM to make a Live-USB. I've tried regular flash drives, high speed UAS flash drives and external USB HDD.

If anyone has experience with such a machine, I'd love to hear from you, and all other suggestions welcome.

Here's a possible solution from Reddit on how to access the NVMe:

Thanks @j2mcgreg. Unfortunately, that is not the issue I'm having, my issue is trying to get it to run up the Live-USB to a working desktop or even to a terminal so I can install the OS.

Have you tried booting the LiveUSB from the one USB 2.0 port? I've got one other machine that will freeze booting from a USB3 port.
If that doesn't work, try the amdgpu.dc=1 boot code (press "e" at the grub screen to edit the kernel boot line that includes "quiet splash" and add that code.

Also I found one report where the iommu=soft boot code was effective in getting Linux to not freeze on that machine.

I have tried all of the failsafe boot options and most of the advanced boot options, including the option to use noswap, but the live-init is still failing at the "potentially adding swap to fstab message". Could this be a potential bug?

I do have a suspicion the issue is related to the Live system not being able to find the NVME drive. I found 4 prior versions for this laptop on Acers support page so I'm going to try downgrading the BIOS to an earlier version to see if it helps and report back, though it will be a few days before I do that. Still open for suggestions in the meantime.

Just out of curiosity: Is it only MX/antiX ?

What about any other distro ? (Especially *buntu + some non-Debian ones).

And just "maybe", if there are such options in Bios:

AMD Cool&Quiet function
C6 Mode
Global C-State Control
Automatic C-State Management

disable.

I found this tutorial on installing Linux Mint on an Acer Swift SF314-57-55BK. It might give you some clues as to what additional hoops you have to jump through:

Thanks for the suggestions. For some reason, when I replied last night, the earlier posts were not showing so I missed them. Will try them this evening before I attempt to downgrade the BIOS

The thing that jumped out at me in Mint tutorial is the need to disable Fast Boot in the bios. I had to do that in that Acer Aspire 3 that I had that died after it got doused with hot liquid. I remember it because I thought it was odd that I had to disable Fast Boot in both the bios and Win 10.
