Green box stayed open after each try. I assumed that was a fix to the upgrade.

I see 3 times mentioned :
"...maybe run apt-get update "
have you done this?
On The green updater Icon this apt-get update is labled as "Refresh / Reload" or "Check for Updates"

E: Failed to fetch http://mirrors.rit.edu/mxlinux/mx-packa ... _amd64.deb 404 Not Found

When you go to the link, it says not found indeed.

Maybe change the repos using the MX Repo Manager. Try Alblasserdam NL, or SLC USA.

I'd say just just refresh / reload package list. b/c the old ones do have not provide the new updated package name.

Ohhh so THAT file is no longer there, but a different name one IS, and for that a reload is needed, aha! Thanks :)

sudo apt-get update fixes it.
I assumed that "...maybe run apt-get update " was a message for someone on your end.
Shouldn't that have been done on your end?

No, we do currently have split the function of update package list and upgrade/full-upgrade,
hence you have at least two places where "apt update /apt-get update " is performed:
* in the right-click menu of the update-icon "Check for updates"
and
*within the Full Upgrade window with a big "Reload" - button.
"MX Updater" itself will only do a refresh of package list automatically once a day.

So,
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y
won't work?

Why do you assume this?
Sure on terminal you can do all this manually.
Note: recommended way would be to use full-upgrade ( or the same dist-upgrade) instead of only upgrade.
sudo apt full-upgrade
b/c upgrade will only upgrade packages but not add any new packages which other to be upgraded packages may now require.
So you would end overtime with having onyl system partially upgraded.
