static/distortion in sound on a previously stable mx install (possible hardware issue?)

#1 Post by cmhobbs »

Hello, folks!

I have an MX Linux install running for a few months with zero problems. Today there seems to be static/distortion in my sound output. Sound was fine yesterday. The only thing that's changed or happened since yesterday is that I installed CS:GO via Steam (which came from apt) and I played a couple of rounds. I also played a couple of other games but they were previously installed.

At some point yesterday, my display wasn't working. I had a mouse but the screen was black. I was able to ssh in and look at dmesg, which said there was a graphics issue so I just rebooted the machine. I didn't run anything with audio all day. When I started CS:GO again, I noticed there was distortion/static when the game started and I assumed it was related to the game. I tried various in-game console commands to fix it without any luck. I played a couple of rounds just dealing with it. After that I loaded a YouTube video in Firefox and it was also distorted.

Plugging headphones into my external soundcard seemed to resolve the issue. No static via the headphones and when I unplugged them I didn't have static on the speakers any longer. Is there something I can check in MX to see if any of my software was the culprit or maybe some messages from my sound card? dmesg didn't return anything useful and I don't see any errors.

Thanks!!

Here's my quick system info:

The first thing I would do is to uninstall CS:GO again.
