MX Snapshot settings

#1 Post by Zeno »

Hi to all.
I want to Exclude all the files from /home/Username/ directory other than SETTINGS, ETC files.

I want to retain all the modifications, changes, theme changes etc done to MX Linus OS after installation. I want to Preserve all the settings but want to exclude all other Data Files in above mentioned directory.

Please help me.
Thanks Again

Actually, the program is almost self-explanatory, because the main points are explained on the respective screen.
The default directories can be excluded directly in the interface, if you have created additional directories yourself in /home you have to edit them in the exclusion file yourself.
Then consider which compression method (xz is only recommended if the size of the iso is very important and you have a strong hardware).

Yes you are right.
But, by default there are so many folders defaulted in /home/username/ directory like Documents, Videos, Music....etc. But I ve deleted all those directories and put Folders of my choice so that im asking.
I want to Exclude all the folders in /home/username/ BUT hidden files (for settings etc)
Can you tell me, are there any hidden files used for System, theme settings on /home/username/ directory? (I want to save only those files)
Thanks

as I have already written: for this is the exclusion file. There are also examples how to handle them.
As a practical person, I have never deleted or renamed them, after all I have data that belongs in there (pictures, music, videos, documents, ....).

Deleting the default directories (which are present in every Linux distribution) and/or replacing them with others is also not a good idea if you don't know exactly why you are doing what you are doing and what the long term consequences might be (no changes=no potential consequences/problems).

You are going the wrong way about it, there are many config files, each program can potential have a config file either in ~/.config (most of them nowadays) or in ~/.programname, so the list has no bottom, it depends what programs you have.

What you need to do is exclude the files you don't want to save. That's what you need to list in exclude file anyway, so whatever folders or files you don't want to save, list them in the exclude file. I have no idea what files you don't want to save, that's your job... To make things easier you could group them in a folder like ~/DATA_I_DONT_NEED or something like that and exclude that folder(s).

Also, like wdscharff said, don't rename default folders, that's a bad idea, you'll have problems sooner or later.

Yes you are right about default folders.
But mostly, my need is that i have to create folders which includes audio, video and documents for that Task. So I need to create a Folder by Task name and have to make sub folders in there with Videos, Audios, and documents.
So I need different structure.
Now it is done.
Can you show me a way to create MX snap shot in my way?
Thanks

I do image editing and video editing, for the working data I have a corresponding temp_media directory under /home, the results go where they belong thematically, for me usually then under /video.

So directories that you can very easily exclude in MX Snapshot.
I don't know your directory structure, it's yours, you thought of something, then find your matching solution that you understand ;-}

I can only show you my backup strategy, you can learn something for yourself, or not ;-}
(it is only one of many possibilities)
