Good evening,
im running a live version of 21 ahs, everything works fine and dandy but I realized I dont have sound at all.
if I run mx soundcard, it says "no soundcard found"
Well thats not true, as Win 10 S - has sound and its working fine enough for zoom meetings in university.

How do I enable that I have sound?
So far I updated all that is possble (I think)
Upgraded all that is possibel (I think)

here my QSI

Searching online, I see several reports of trouble on linux with the Intel Celeron/Pentium Silver Processor High Definition Audio. It looks like a sof-firmware problem.
You may need to go into MX Package Installer, the MX Test Repo tab and install firmware-sof-signed.

The OP may have to make a persistent Live USB to reboot with the newer sof firmware (2.1.1).

But there's also a newer 2.2.2 upstream in Debian that I will backport.

Here are the newer sof 2.2.2 firmware debs if you want them before they go to AHS:

Thank you for the fast replies.
Sadly I have no clue how to do that.

Links to these topics very much welcome.

First the persistent live sounds like a good idea. I assume it is like I can load into the updated live saved on the USB stick whenever I plug it in and boot from it. Right?

I'll see if I find these files in the test repo.
If I don't, how do I install the 2 options you showed me?

Linux noob trying my best to make it right :)

Was trying to create a persistance file with the Remaster tool.
When clicking on the usb stick (that currently has the ventoy iso's of which I run this liveUSB) it gives me an error.
See Screenshots.

In Thunar, i can't check how much space I still got on the Ventoy USB nothing happens - I think I at the very first moment got a message that said "can't mount"

Do I need an empty USB to create these persistance USB?

There are so many files, which one do I need?
Should I try this one first, or the one in the Test Repo?

As nothing of he persist options were working, I installed MX normally alongside Win10 S
worked fine (except sound)
than I realized I didn't have wifi for 3 hours. Strangely Win10 didn't connect either.

So right after the install finished I installed the Test Repo version of the Sound driver, rebooted.
Nothing, still the same no soundcard available.

Good afternoon everyone.

Well, so far nothing new.
And I don't know how to install the file the other user hosted earlier in google drive. I once tried installing a deb file (slimjet browser) and that didn't went well :D

isn't there a way to use the configs from Windows 10, as it's working there.

Edit: As I made some adjustments to the laptop by now, and updated a few things, here is the current System Info

If you see anything else that might be a good idea to chance (not related to the sound issue), just mention it here shortly, I'll post a new thread about it.

EDIT 2:
As I was just rebooting the PC to do a Screenshot in Win10, I realized in the boot up of MXLinux, there are some messages flashing, too fast to read anything, but maybe something important, as it's happening during the boot up of MX as the animation is playing.

So, how do I install it now?
Last time I tried to install a deb file it didn't work

Right-click the deb file and choose "install deb file" in Thunar, or Actions/"Install deb file" in Dolphin on the KDE edition.

Don't give up on installing compatible deb files--do it the right way like in Thunar or Dolphin, and it's very easy.

So you mean the lower option?
As it says
Install Deb file

The upper one says
Open in gdeb ...

Will try the install Deb file

Good afternoon.
Well I just tried the driver Stevo provided.
To be honest, I'm not sure if it actually installed.

Long story short - I still don't hear sound, which is a bit of bummer, as I would need some to hear my university courses on monday.

Attached, a screenshot of the the terminal window after installation.
And the current Sys Info, after i rebooted

To prevent confusions (and to turn back to the sof driver to see what happens with it now) remove the created .conf file:

Code: Select all

sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf
Reboot.

(Though I think it still won't work, as this is a non-MX thing.. Just an issue due to Intel and/or sof (for the new drivers/firmware) )

Hi,
copy pasted that command into terminal.
Shutdown, reboot.

No Sound.
There is no soundcard to select now. Like it was at the beginning.

No way to use the drivers that the installed win 10 S is using?

Anything else I could try before I have to RMA this laptop?

I googled some, and found something from 2014 talking about a grub command that may remove a conflict from the (previously) running windows.
I doubt this is actually related, as its from 2014 and this should be fixed in the kernel / ALSA driver by now.

Command says
Found the link - https://askubuntu.com/questions/1237007 ... 3xxx-n3xxx
I've been trying to get my speakers to run on my x5 z8300 atom laptop for a week, and this seems to finally have solved it:
Run
sudo -H gedit /etc/default/grub
and add 915.disable_power_well=0 to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT. If you have for example

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
you'd replace it with

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="i915.disable_power_well=0 quiet splash"
Found here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1256655
Found the soundcard (at least something with the same name) on linux-hardware.org
https://linux-hardware.org/?id=pci:8086-3198-1043-1e70
says there "device is supported by kernel 4.11 an newer according to the LKDDb

something I find hard to believe.

As I said, I got till Thursday before I have to reset the laptop to be replaced by the seller, so a few stabs in the dark can't hurt.

EDIT:
Found these info, tried it - didn't work.
the windows key pressing combo did nothing,
the alsactl command just brought
"no soundcard detected"

Good afternoon everyone,
the new laptop came on Tuesday, I set Windows up, Setup a new SSD and installed a fresh MX again.

I set it up for the needed things and themed it a bit, so here I am again.
Still there is NO sound, how shall we tackle this now so I can participate on my ZOOM courses in about 2 weeks?
I haven't done anything we have discussed previously, so we can start from square one.
As recommended earlier I'm using ext4 as filesystem now, root and home are 2 different partitions on the new SSD (like ESP and Swap)

Timeshift should be able to autosave thanks to the setup by
https://github.com/wmutschl/timeshift-autosnap-apt

I'll add a new Quick Info in case there is something new with this laptop.

You can (actually: do , 5.18 and 5.19 reached EOL) install the most recent (6.0) kernel :

IIRC the current kernel and settings will be stored, and I can just select the new 6.0 kernel from the grub menu, right?

Yes: 6.0 will become the default and older ones will get under "Advanced Options" in Grub.

It's a long-time (sof) issue , since 2017..

https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=369454

https://patchwork.kernel.org/project/al ... u-desktop/

https://github.com/thesofproject/linux/issues/3460#issuecomment-1062138713 wrote:
@plbossart In which kernel release can we expect these fixes?

5.18 at best, I just sent the patches to the maintainers.

P.S. You'll see your chip-ID: 8086:3198 there ...

... But maybe with 6.1 according to here:

https://github.com/thesofproject/linux/ ... 1293545772

Till then, nothing to lose to install the latest (only 14 days old) 2.3 :

Code: Select all

git clone https://github.com/thesofproject/sof-bin ; cd sof-bin/ ; sudo ./install.sh v2.3.x/v2.3
Reboot.

... If still not, just apply the conf file again:

Code: Select all

echo "options snd-intel-dspcfg dsp_driver=1" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf
Reboot.

Then: Menu => Alsamixer : press F6 : select "0 ... Intel" then press F5 (all) then take a screenshot and post. (or just tell what it writes on top-left corner for Card: ... ) .. (Or if there are bars (more than 1-2 only) play with them, (you can unmute/mute with M from keyboard)

Being a bit confused by what you posted, but will try this git clone thing.

Googled a bit but most of the time I have no clue what the folks are talking about.
Would this even be relevant?

looking at the github page, and opening the 2.3 folder, there is nothing in there. 2.2 has some files in it, but 2.3 just says "empty file"

I remember that heikomat but it was for other devices : bytcht ...

In the meantime, the links I gave were just to give an idea (just to read) about the issue (it's everywhere and since a long time, not MX-specific).. The only one to apply is the git clone ... (in that post)

Ok.. it looks so, maybe for it's too new. You can apply the 2.2 but you already tried previously with the deb file...

Anyway, since you already have the directory, just this will do it :

Code: Select all

cd sof-bin/ ; sudo ./install.sh v2.2.x/v2.2

P.S. If that terminal is still open and if the prompt shows

Code: Select all

Dana@mxDana:~/sof-bin
then just

Code: Select all

sudo ./install.sh v2.2.x/v2.2

Didn't do this as of now.

tried the other command and got the error file already exists

Code: Select all

Dana@mxDana:~

./install.sh ERROR: /lib/firmware/intel/sof already installed? (Re)move it first.
will do the remove thing now, and reply with the answer.

Did so.
Non of the bars could be changed, just muted / unmuted - they were not muted to begin with.

I didn't reboot this time, but turned off the PC, and saw that the text is now different and a red FAILED is missing.

booting up, I can see multiple error messages showing up - no time to read it.
Could these info help?

So, it looks almost the same with previous trials..

Nothing to lose:

Code: Select all

echo "options snd-hda-intel model=laptop-dmic enable=yes" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/sound2.conf
Reboot.

Is there actually a difference between reboot and turn off?

rebooted - No Sound

there is a BIOS message at the very top when Linux boots

As this is getting more and more an issue, the more the laptop is needed.

Is there a way to get in contact with the ALSA team, I was looking on their page https://www.alsa-project.org - but I'm kind of at a loss on how to check my specific soundchip or how to report the issue to them.

As you have a pressing need for a working sound card, I suggest that you search your local market or Amazon for one of these:

https://www.canadacomputers.com/product ... _id=121319

which are known to work with Linux.

Found a real old bluetooth headset I once bought as I was driving a lot.
After pairing it, it seem to work rather fine. Sound plays - metal blasting in my ear right now.
And zoom picked up my voice right away as I was in the settings.

Why does bluetooth speaker and recording work, but not the internal speakers and mic of the laptop?
May this help in figuring out whats the issue?

Any insight why Bluetooth audio / recording is working and normal sound or the 3.5mm jack does not?

I got some time over the next days, and wanted to try some things I found on other forums. Though most of them are for totally other distros, I want to make sure I don't f** something up.

Is making a Timeshift backup enough tob keep me save, or should I make an iso out of all my harddrive?

Cheers and have a pleasant and relaxed time

https://github.com/thesofproject/sof-bi ... ain/v2.4.x

If I see this correct, a new version was released not to long ago.
How can I tell if it is actually the correct one to use on this laptop?

Installing it would be the same command (just new link) as in a previous post by Huckleberry, right?

So far, using Bluetooth earbuds works, and using them as microphone during zoom sessions and meetings works good, but wearing them 10+ hours isn't that great, hence having the speakers and mic of the laptop working would be great

You may need to blacklist snd_soc_skl and snd_sof_pci_intel_apl. You can add to or create a blacklist.conf in /etc/modprobe.d containing:

Code: Select all

blacklist snd_soc_skl
blacklist snd_sof_pci_intel_apl
reboot.

I had a similar issue on older kernel recently and after creating a conf file in /etc/modprobe.d it still failed on sound until blacklisting what the kernel wanted to load.

Hi roundup,
thank you very much for the reply.
I'll try this out as soon as possible.

Should I have sound right after the reboot, or do I have to select / change something first?
What about this new SOF driver update I mentioned earlier. Should I install that first or wait and see what the blacklisting achieves?

created the file, added the 2 lines, rebooted and nothing.
Soundcardselect had one HDA Intel PCH selected

Alsamixer gives me standart and this HDA to select from. Standart gives me control over speaker volume and capture volume.
the HDA selection only shows 4 s/pdif that cant be changed or altered.

All in all, the laptop is still as silent as it was before.

@argonaut459

have a look at post #20 in this thread of mine where I discuss the problems I was having with the 6.0 and 6.1 kernels and audio.

https://forum.mxlinux.org/viewtopic.php ... 7&start=10

My solution was to use MXPI to install the Debian 5.10 kernel. In my case, sound is working, not perfectly, but it is working. This, I think, is a temporary fix, as the bugs in the 6 series kernels will get worked out in due course.

🤔 there was a reason I chose the AHS version for that laptop.
Maybe it was just me being stupid
New laptop = newest version needed, without realizing that the laptop is of course rather mundane "old" tech

So just download other kernel from mxpi and choose it in grub?
Will try in the next days

Good evening,
tried both Antix 4. and 5 kernels via live system - no sound, and no wifi card found :D
downloaded Debian 5.10 - no sound
downloaden 5.19 - no sound

so far all MX already had HDA Intel already selected as Soundcard, including the 5.x Antix,
4.X Antix didn't recognize any soundcard right away.

I'm really at a loss. What else could be done to get this soundchip on here working?

attached a QSI of the 5.19 kernel im running right now.

Will deleting the other kernels via MXPI be enough, or do I have to do something manually?
Cheers

Good evening friends of free software.

I was playing around with the laptop again, and wanted to try out a gnome desktop, so Im using a fedora 38 live usb right now.
Now the important part.
The settings showed Celeron High definition audio right away, after booting. But NO SOUND.
So 3 hours later, after an update finally went trough

I openend Alsamixer, selected the now offered
SOF-ESSX8336
and for the very first time I was offered options, sliders and things to actullay change. First left speaker made a plop, than other setting - right speaker.
I GOT SOUND - a bit quiet but finally.

NOW, how do I find out what that update actually did, and how do I do that in my MX

having a zoutube video play in the background, and alsamixer now shows as Chip and Card - Pipewire and only one slider - master audio.

Sadly batterie is now dead, but if any of you got an idea on how to figure out what happend and how to replicate, Im all ears

git clone https://github.com/thesofproject/sof-bin ; cd sof-bin/ ; sudo ./install.sh v2.3.x/v2.3
Reboot.
Good evening everyone. With the awkward success recently I had a look at the sof page, and I found this new version.
https://github.com/thesofproject/sof/re ... tag/v2.2.5
IIRC this processor is Gemini Lake, but the sound chip was rather often referred to as this ES8336, and thats what fedora showed too.

Just so that I understand the command from huckleberry correct, it now should be

Code: Select all

git clone https://github.com/thesofproject/sof-bin ; cd sof-bin/ ; sudo ./install.sh v2.2.x/v2.2.5
the last v2.2.5 is the "file" in the git repo, and hopefully pics the correct folder (driver) to use.

How do I undo this, if it doesn't work and the laptop may not boot anymore?

You should create a snapshot right now and write it to a usb drive. Then if things do go sour, you can restore your system to where it is presently.

Your latest two QSIs show that you have used both the 5.19 and 6.0 kernels. We know that the 6.0 kernel was flaky on some machines so I think that you shoild use MXPI to install the Debian 6.1.xxx kernel as it will not only contain newer firmware but Also the ancillary instruction set to use it properly.

Maybe run Timeshift too, if you haven't used it, it's relatively straight forward and easy to run and other than maybe the location for saving the Timeshift "snapshot" (not MX Snapshot) the defaults are good as it's intended use is for system backup, not data backup - although some knowledgeable forum members do use it for some data also.
Other than the location, which may be fine if you have enough room in the default location (I think it's in the home folder, I keep mine in a DATA partition) it's simple, Create, Restore, like a spst switch - on, off. :p

Personally, I run MX Cleanup, Timeshift, then MX Snapshots.

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail ... -interface
OR
https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail ... ono-preamp
Volume may reduced slightly, not sure, but it also has a built-in DAC. Similar to what mc2greg linked.

Good Luck

Good afternoon everyone.
I tried 6.1 kernel from the MXPI yesterday, didn't provide sound.
The rest of your suggestions I'll do now.

As I got fedora running atm, here some info (heck these commands are hard to find for fedora :D )
These infos are from a "linuxuprising homepage about no sound on Ubuntu"
Just to gather all possible info so we can figure out what actually made it work here.

from an actual fedora post I found this for bug tracking, I attached the txt file, had to rename it so forum accepts it.

If needed I can provide the BEFORE settings by starting a new live session.

installing 6.1 kernel right now.
EDIT:
installed the 6.1 kernel from MXPI, deleted the 6.0 kernel via the MXcleanup (wasn't deletable via MXPI)
during the booting I saw MORE errors pop up than before.
How do I access these again?

like yesterday, I got these messages in the console:

Code: Select all

/etc/kernel/postinst.d/initramfs-tools:

I: Set the RESUME variable to override this.
/etc/kernel/postinst.d/zz-update-grub:
may this pose a problem?

EDIT:
created a new snapshot and saved it an external harddrive.
timeshift snaptshots are created automatically before an update (via a script I found recommended in a video)
tried to copy the last 2 timeshift snaptshots to the external drive - not all files have been copied. tried it a few times, probably an issue cause the external HDD uses NTFS.

Well that didn't go as expected

Code: Select all

./install.sh ERROR: v2.2.x/sof-v2.2.5 not found
Taking a look at the v2.2.5 file - its empty. All of these files are empty

What did I do wrong?

The install.sh command should be correct. But I don't know why all these files are empty? And I don't know why most of the folders are topology (tplg) "things"

This is very frustrating :bawling:

@argonaut459
You should be able to uninstall the 6.0 kernel from MXPI, see link:
https://ibb.co/p2KncnD

Re: Timeshift, you should be able to schedule without a script, I included a location image too, see Images.
https://ibb.co/M7gHNhy
https://ibb.co/wwWzkCX

I haven't tried copying Timeshift snapshots, I just Create and Restore.

I'm a linux newb, most of your stuff is over my head, but regarding:

I'm not sure what you tried so far (yes I glanced through you post a few days ago but…), I assume you tried the obvious: Pulse Audio Control (pavucontrol), and checked all of the settings while the source is playing, check fallback, it sets the keyboard control for whatever device (check mark).

MX Select Sound – I haven't had much luck with this.
============================================
As I had to change some alsamixer settings to make the sound work, I attach this amixer_after.txt file, as I'm not that sure if ONLY needed settings were changed.
If needed I can provide the BEFORE settings by starting a new live session.
MX Alsamixer - I have found it easy to impossible for me if this is the issue, but do you get sound after you change or select a sound card in Alsamixer F6?
If you do, does it retain that setting and still play sound after a reboot?
If it does not, and sound will not play now, I'd try:

Code: Select all

sudo alsactl store
If the sound setting is still not retained, I'd possibly try:

Code: Select all

sudo alsactl restore
https://www.geeksforgeeks.org/alsactl-c ... -examples/
Also, you may want to make a backup copy of /var/lib/alsa/asound.state, or just make a temporarily copy of it with featherpad before you run any of the commands above just to compare it to see if it makes any changes.

I might make a Timeshift snapshot before this.

I doubt if indicator-sound-switcher will help.

Is the .sh file a bash file (newbie) for your Timeshift script?
@davemx may want to try this too.

HTH

@argonaut459 It doesnt appear you did anything wrong here. The files in v2.2.x are missing a 2.2.5 folder. ( also missing a 2.2.2 file!)

if you try

Code: Select all

sh install.sh v2.2.x/v2.2
it gets into the install (however it fails on my test rig saying that "/lib/firmware/intel/sof" already exists. )

Looking through the Fedora files I uploaded, it seems like

Code: Select all

Packages installed
!!--------------------

alsa-lib-1.2.8-3.fc38.x86_64
alsa-utils-1.2.8-2.fc38.x86_64
alsa-sof-firmware-2.2.4-3.fc38.noarch
Seem to be the needed packages.
I got to check what the file says if I create in MX, I assume all that is missing is the 2.2.4 firmware.

I just wonder how they implemented it, when the files are empty and only the topology files seem to be necessary.

I guess a simple copy & paste of folder won't be feasible as it's ARCH and probably baked into the 6.2 kernel they are using

Good evening everyone.
I was tinkering with the kde version on a different PC, and caught the
Sof-firmware 2.2.4 in the corner of my eye.

Found the 2.2.4 version on the normal repo and gave it a try after a routine update.
See above console text about the install of it.

Rebooted
Still no sound.

Wanted to make sure it ain't a change I did earlier.
Sadly running a live version from my ventoy stick is running in a full ram, swap and root partition and aborting the update.

I'm kind of out of ideas :(

A little update:
Installed MX23 with liquourix 6.4.15 kernel on an external SSD.
needed to select es8336 explicitly on the MX soundcard select AND needed to select it in ALSA as well, or I couldn't fiddle with the settings.
So far there is sound, but its quiet.
It can be increased by selecting and changing a few settings (update as soon as I'm back on the laptop), yet it is not comparable to what Windows would offer.

internal microphone doesn't seem to be recognized either.
Suggestions on how to proceed?

messed up the system big time - going to install rolling Gnome distro so she can try if she's really more comfortable with Gnome than current xfce. Despite being laggy and "weird" for me, might be a more natural thing for her.

Yet again, will report back when I got MX23 setup again, and found out which alsa settings do what in terms of how more or less audible it gets.
