A question re revenue

#1 Post by linexer2016 »

Dear Developers and others who make MX Linux available,
Firstly, I mean this post to be with the utmost respect and do not want to offend anyone simply by asking the question ....

Is the MX Linux we see essentially a free product or do some/all the developers earn some kind of revenue for their splendid efforts? The following links might also be of some use in understanding my question.
https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/linux-fre ... kes-money/
https://www.zdnet.com/article/how-do-li ... -software/

I should hasten to add that I think it entirely reasonable to expect some form of compensation is afforded but as Linux is generally Open Source it fascinates me how such a good product as MX is can be continually delivered if there is no reward beyond an enthusiast's desire to share.

We are all volunteers, nobody is compensated. We did purchase some hardware for testing, compiling packages, coding, but nobody is here for handouts.
We paid a bounty for systemd-shim when we needed help and donated some funds to Xfce and possible other similar projects that presently escape me.

We use free software that other people put a lot of effort in for free most of them, it would make no sense for us to ask to be paid, all the donations go for domain names, server bandwidth, websites, etc, not salaries.

Well thank you Adrian for (as Jerry said) your excellent and accurate response. Again, I thought carefully before penning my question as I did not want to appear ungrateful in any way for the stellar work you all clearly do. To get your reply then is appreciated and clarifying something that I had long thought (even in passing) about when it comes to Linux generally. As those linked articles suggest, there are probably some in the overall fraternity that do derive some compensation and again, I don't begrudge those people. As far as you MX Developers, all I can say is thank you so very much for your great work in delivering and maintaining a truly excellent distribution.

I thought it sank?!

Seriously though, all funds are held by a not-for-profit corp we set up specifically to manage MX Linux's needs. We are not tax exempt, but the not-for-profit status allows the project to own itself. certain dev team members act as directors.
