suspend not working

When I go to use either the suspend GUI in XFCE or pm-suspend from the CLI, I get a one-second suspend followed by my laptop waking back up. Below is the relevant logging info from syslog:

I'm not really seeing what my potential solution could be, hoping for some clues on the forum (didn't see anything that was directly related to my problem, closest I could find was suspend issues related to pulse audio. Here are my system specs:

As the 1st step you can try two things (at least to see what happens):

Boot with systemd (Advanced Options in Grub) and try (again, also with the commands: sudo pm-suspend (and) systemctl suspend )

And : Same (with default init and with systemd) with 5.19 kernel (MX Package Installer - Popular Apps tab). (In case of any problems, your current (5.18) kernel will be in "Advanced Options" in Grub, to boot with)

P.S. Also check Bios settings if there are options that could cause it wake up / stay awake.. i.e. disable "Wake on Lan" ...

P.P.S. You can also check: /var/log/pm-suspend.log and /var/log/sleep.log (though they may show as if suspend and also wake-up was successful)

Huck Finn,

Thanks for the prompt response. Didn't have any luck with those options.
  • upgraded to 5.19ahs. Default boot settings hangs after the splash screen, with systemd I can boot into the OS, but pm-suspend and systemctl suspend still have the same behavior.
  • Looked in my BIOS, no wake LAN options were enabled.
  • enabling systemd in 5.18 didn't change the behavior either
  • pm-suspend.log files didn't reveal anything -- basically that suspend and resume were performed 4 seconds apart.
I'm open to other ideas, as the inability to suspend is a real fly in the ointment for me. Thanks!

P.S. Lost my dual display in kernel 5.19 as well -- wondering if I need to install the nvidia modules upon the upgrade? I didn't pay attention to dkms when the upgrade tool was installing 5.19....

If you like you can make 5.18 the default with "MX Boot Options" - "Boot to" menu.

Or you can start "Nvidia Driver Installer" when booted with 5.19 (it'll tell you what's available/possible or not etc..)

Another test:

(No matter what kernel) press E on Grub then add (type) nomodeset , like :

/boot/vmlinuz-5.18.0-4mx-amd64 ...root=UUID=... ro quiet splash nomodeset

then press F10 to go on boot.

Then just try to suspend any way (say sudo pm-suspend )

Next boot instead of nomodeset, same way add

Code: Select all

pci=nomsi,noaer
try suspend.

Quick update -- adding 'nomodeset' did not work -- only got a blank screen with a blinking cursor upon bootup, so had to drop down to the terminal and try pm-suspend. My laptop hung.

Adding 'pci=nomsi,noaer' to my bootup sequence got me into the desktop environment. When I run pm-suspend, my monitor turns off but not the rest of the laptop -- I can still hear the fans spinning. Below is the output of my pm-suspend.log:

What do the nomsi and noaer calls on the bootup sequence do?

I stepped away for 3 minutes after doing a pm-suspend, and my laptop actually did go to sleep -- fans stopping running. So looks like problem solved?! However, I'd like to get further details on why turning off error reporting was allowing my laptop to go to sleep?
  • noaer: [PCIE] If the PCIEAER kernel config parameter is enabled, this kernel boot option can be used to disable the use of PCIE advanced error reporting.
  • nomsi: [MSI] If the PCI_MSI kernel config parameter is enabled, this kernel boot option can be used to disable the use of MSI interrupts system-wide.
From what I can tell with a quick search, disabling error reporting will prevent me from diagnosing other errors that may be occurring on my machine. Not sure if this is a long-term fix for me if that is the case.....

Spoke too soon again -- after about 5 minutes of web browsing, my mouse pointer got incredibly slow and unresponsive and I was unable to drop down to a terminal (ctrl-alt-F1) to restart lightdm. Weird....

... As I mentioned beforehand, log shows as if suspend and wake-up were successful (except some were "not applicable")..

Shortly it's a kernel issue, maybe it gets solved with 6.0+ kernels ..

Nothing to lose to try this, again temporarily (press E on Grub ...)

Code: Select all

intel_iommu=off

In the meantime: How is it on live session? (with the official MX iso you installed with... To see what happens without the Nvidia driver ...)

No joy putting intel_iommu=off in my boot sequence :-( I'll have to try to see if suspend works from the live USB this weekend. Will keep you posted. And thanks again for the continued help on this. Now if I could only get my microphone to get detected on video calls......post for another time.

Meanwhile: I assumed you had no Windows, but if you do: don't forget to disable "Fast Startup" there. (...as it keeps devices engaged for it's not a real shutdown)

Though Nouveau is already blacklisted (automatically when you install the Nvidia with Nvidia Driver Installer), on the installed system you can try (again press E on Grub)

Code: Select all

nouveau.modeset=0
or

Code: Select all

modprobe.blacklist=nouveau
