I would guess this a must-have for AHS Repo...

Yep, that generally causes issues (no card detected or no sound whatever you do), therefore it may be good to keep it most up-to-date as possible (though newest is not always the best :) )

The newest we can get from upstream is an Ubuntu version of 2.1.1, modified from Debian's upstream version, though that may change whenever that maintainer gets the new release.

It still looks like the newest Debian has is 2.24...

http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/no ... mware-sof/

(Note that upstream Debian has moved appropriate firmware packages to a new section, "non-free-firmware", so a user can add that section to get firmware only, and not be exposed to any other non-free cooties.)

I'll see if it's feasible to use the 2.2.4 build template for 2.4.1.

I may dig this up, as it seems that these SOF guys are strange on how they release something.
considering
https://github.com/thesofproject/sof-bi ... tag/v2.2.6

has been released on July 06 now and a pre release of v2023.09-rc1 a week ago.
Considering that these es8336 chips seem to cause grief on all (cheap) laptops.
Thank you very much in advance

I don't see it as strange at all. In Linux, a lot of hardware components have to be reverse engineered because the manufacturers are only producing Windows drivers. Most likely the chip maker has released a new version since the driver was published in July which means that the developers are now working on an enhanced version of the driver.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

That part so far is clear and kind of obvious, but I don't get why multiple versions 2.2.x and 2.4.x and so on are provided at the same time and especially as 2.4 doesn't seem to incorporate things from 2.2
that's the kind of baffling part.
However that's not topic here, and I merely ask cause I'm still struggling to get sound and mic running on a laptop.
Thank you very much in advance
