Speakers (unavailable)

Hi,

I am using this mini PC since a couple of years with MX Linux.
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4001222870244.html

Worked fine out of the box with MX Linux 19.1 up to 19.4 what I am using now.

When I upgraded to 21 the build in speaker did not worked anymore. Same with 21.1 and now 21.2. - Because 19.4 is starting to get old and waiting until it just works 'out of the box' does not seem to do it I would like the advice of the community of how I can get my speaker working.

It is just a small thing bu that low quality build in speaker I actually use it and wishes it to work. Audio in general does work. The sound card 'PCH: HDA-Intel shows up and works. I have audio when I use a bluetooth device. It is just in the internal speaker (and microphone) that is listed in the device menu but not available.

At the moment version 21.2 is a live-boot. I would be great full for advice to get this working.

This is the Quick System Info from my current working 19.4 install - (below this is the one of the 21.2 version where the speaker does not work);

On live session you can play with "Alsamixer" from menu. F6 select card (select 0 ... Intel rather than "Default" , then press F5 (all) then play with the bars, any item may be muted though it looks at max. , you can unmute/mute with the M key from keyboard)

Also you can see what happens with antiX 4.19 kernel from MX Package Installer - Popular Apps tab (as the driver version is the kernel, though they look the same and loaded). However on live session, after the kernel installation you need to run "MX RemasterCC" then "MX Live Usb Kernel Updater" to make it permanent, then reboot with that.

Thanks for the advice.

I checked Alsamixer out. Nothing weird going on there. Was able to select the non-default, tried the settings. That was not it.
I installed the 4.19 kernel and made a new live boot.

Makes not difference but I see the 4.19 kernel is not used actually.

I also tried when booting from the live session with at the advanced settings the 'failsave' option. When I booted in 'failsafe' the speaker worked. I got sound while loading in to the desktop. I checked the system info in failsafe mode and it was also using the current 5.18 kernel. So the speaker can work with it.

This is the 'system info' from the live boot in 'failsafe' mode;

You get to select the new kernel in grub when you are booting, going into advanced. It auto boots on the default kernel. You can change that in the boot options later on if you find the new one working better.

I was not able to find in the menus of the live boot an option to select a specific kernel. But when I am booted in the live version I did run the installed tool 'Live USB kernel updater'.

I was able to switch over to the antiX 4.19 kernel. I am now booted in the version and I am using indeed 4.19. And I have sound, the speaker works.

So it seems that when I do a real install it will work if I use kernel 4.19. But when I booted in 'failsafe' with 5.18 it worked also.

Ah in the liveboot. In any case, glad you found it. You can make whatever changes you wish to keep permanent in the MX Boot Options settings.

Maybe someone still has an idea what that failsafe actually did, might be a cleaner solution, maybe.

I thought you already did that:
Huckleberry Finn wrote: Mon Aug 29, 2022 11:03 am...However on live session, after the kernel installation you need to run "MX RemasterCC" then "MX Live Usb Kernel Updater" to make it permanent, then reboot with that.

Yes.
Failsafe Boot
In addition to forcing safe video, also load all drivers early in the boot process.
So, just install MX 21.2 AHS and :

Code: Select all

echo -e 'snd_hda_intel\n\nloop' | sudo tee /etc/modules
try the sound when rebooted with 5.18 .

If stll not: Till you find a solution, make the 4.19 default with "MX Boot Options" - "Boot to" menu.

(Of course you can also try 5.10 to be more up-to-date)

I don't really understand this stuff, but I was checking out how does persistence working on pendrive and when I only used root persistence and logged in to root, there was no sound available. But when I switched back to demo account, the sound was working just fine. Can't explain why!

The AHS version may have a regression in its 5.18.16 kernel for your hardware.

AHS is mainly for those that have hardware released since the Stable Debian version MX is based upon was frozen in the earlier parts of 2021, or those with the yearning to experiment. Since your hardware runs fine on MX 19 non-ahs, you don't require it.

I'd try MX 21 standard, with its 5.10 kernel, in a live session to see if the problem persists.

I have installed 21.2 today. I noticed the option to keep my /home and used it.

After install the speaker did not worked. When I booted in kernel 4.19 it did worked. I then installed the 5.10 kernel. When I booted in that one it worked also. And when I booted after that again with the default 5.18 kernel speaker still worked.

Whatever it may be it works. That is enough.

Stevo wrote: Mon Aug 29, 2022 11:39 pm The AHS version may have a regression in its 5.18.16 kernel for your hardware.
Back when I was running 19.2 (non AHS) I MX Linux 21 was just released. I upgraded (non live) to 21. Normal x64 version, just like I was using already. Speaker did not worked.

Was not in a mood to try to get it working. Was thinking is was probably because I used a brand new, just released release. Tried the version before it; 19.4 x64. That worked out of the box with my speaker. All looked good. And used that one.

Now when trying to install 21.2 I used the AHS version because it is labeled as the version for recent computers. My tiny weak computer was released in early 2020 with the then just released Intel Celeron J4115 possessor. - I was thinking, well that is still 'recent hardware', let's try that version.

Because I earlier used the x64 version and it did not worked with the 21 version I assumed it would not work now also. Did not tried it dough with the current 21.2 x64 version. Was something I could have done.

In any case thanks for the advice.

Interestingly; when using version 19.4 I got no message as an end-user that this version was not longer supported. Usually I migrate well before end of life of a version. I expected to get a popup or some message bar when running the update tool. But there are just no new updates. That is all.
