NTFS partition mounts read-only

I recently acquired a new PC configured with Windows 11 and installed MX-21.1 with a dual boot. My plan was to share the Windows ntfs partition for data. This worked for the first week, but suddenly the partition only mounts as a read-only file system. The folders and files identify as read-write, but write access is grayed out (or "read only file system" displays in a console window). I tried unmounting and mounting with no change in status. Maybe this is a Windows poison pill! Anyway, not sure how to mount the ntfs partition as read-write again. Thanks!

do you know if you have fast startup disabled in windows? i have read it can cause similar problems with mounting its drive https://www.windowscentral.com/how-disa ... st-startup.

Mine's locked read-only as well- I run dual boot on separate SSDs. I thought I'd changed my Windoze off Fast-Boot, but I'll go back in there today and double check. Seemed to me at one time that always did the trick, but not so sure it's working anymore.

I disabled fast start when I installed Linux. For some reason, there was no problem until today. I will try booting with Windows and ensure it didn't change back. Thanks for the thought.

I verified that fast startup is still disabled. However, the shift + power down idea worked when I rebooted to MX. Not sure if that was the fix or I had the luck of the draw. But it likely unblocked something. Looks like a Microsoft poison pill after all.

fwiw, if there is a windows update is due to be installed upon reboot, ntfs devices get locked until the update is done.

Well I checked that I didn't have fast booting. Tried the shift key thing and didn't work for me- not that I cared that much about it but I got curious.
