Grub default entry rebooting repeatedly

#1 Post by HPienaar »

Hi

I am running MX21 XFCE with Linux 5.10.0-10 as my default grub entry. After trying to reload from hibernation/suspend(?), I presume, my old Macbook Pro(2.2) reboots itself if left on the default boot entry. I can boot it on the submenu entry "MX 21 Wildflower, with Linux 5.10.0-9-amd64.

I have tried to search for this, but sadly no luck. I have tried to fix Grub with MX Boot Repair - same result, but am hesitant to recreate the installation completely.

I was running VSCODE and Chrome at the time of hibernation. I have been running MX since MX19 successfully on this machine - first real problem.

I would appreciate and help or ideas to fix.
Many thanks
Hendrik

Can you clarify this part?

What if you install antiX 4.9 (or 4.19) kernel from MX Package Installer - Popular Apps tab, and select that from Advanced Options to boot, then try to suspend?

Also try (before and after) with:

Code: Select all

sudo pm-suspend

Hi Huckleberry Finn

Many thanks for the reply.

...reboots itself if left on the default boot entry...means that if I use the default boot entry, it will try to boot and when it gets to a quarter of the loading bar at the bottom, it will reboot by itself and load grub from scratch and this just cycles indefinitely.

I will try your suggestions soon. I'm in UTC+2 timezone, so will be a bit later.
Thanks again.
Hendrik

Ok, you can also try once what happens if you boot with systemd (in Advanced Options)

Also, if you still have the official iso: Is it the same on live session?

Hi

I have successfully rebooted into the systemd version, as you suggested. Then, as is my custom, run a full upgrade, and viola! new os version was available. That sorted everything.

Thanks you so much for your effort in helping. It's really appreciated, and great to know that there is help when you need it. I'm quite new to Linux and my history was running on MacOS and Windows.

Have a great one!
Hendrik
