Yesterday, after trying several cheap sound cards, I installed the Creative Blaster Audigy Fx 5.1 PCIe Sound Card and it worked perfectly. The system detected it immediately and I didn't even have to install the driver.
The sound is perfect, crystal clear and the volume is powerful. Distortion-free sound. The output volume is higher than the built-in card ever was and, although my vintage ears are not what they were, I am hearing vocals more clearly than before.

Which version of MX are you running? Also do you have the PCI id? The Debian device database is unfortunately pretty dated, 2014 from the looks of it.
