Norvpn since the last update works only in systemd
when starting in sysinit it gives me: Whoops! /run/nordvpn/nordvpnd.sock not found
After install sudo usermod -aG nordvpn $USER but still not work in boot
I try to reintall via MX Package Installer work untill the next boot: Whoops! /run/nordvpn/nordvpnd.sock not found
I don't know how to install Oracle script: MX-Linux /nordvpn-sysvinit-compat find in

Did you reboot before trying the vpn? Usually when you update the vpn program, it won't work without a reboot.
Reinstall: use nordvpn entry in Popular apps tab of MXPI. Not the entry in Stable tab.

Thanks for posting "Quick System Info", unfortunately you removed the [code]code-tags[/code], which would have made it easier to read.
OK, just installed NordVPN and it works in both SysVinit and systemd.
I'm afraid their deb-package update, seems to remove some SysVinit compatibility.
Suggest this: you first remove NordVPN and install again, both steps by using MXPI->Pop.Apps->Network -> NordVPN. And logout/login or reboot.

OK, thanks.
Seems something with their init.d script.
I think this might worth a try, when running with SysVinit

Yes, and does work to connect?

By the way, I get the same "sock" error message in Fedora (systemd) after an update of nordvpn via their rpm repos.
I do have to reinstall the package whenever that happens and re-enable the service with the appropriate systemctl command, then reboot.
So it may not be merely a sysv thing but a nordvpn thing.

That, was my suspicion too, b/c after a service nordvpn restart, the socket is available and it offers me to connect. Also the PID error is some typical type of not properly setup "service"

I've booted into my mx21 beta and note that my working nordvpn was at ver 3.11. There is now an update to 3.12. I'll install the update, reboot and see what happens.
[UPDATED]
Yep, after upgrade, I rebooted and got the same "whoops sock" message as the other posters when I tried to connect.
Per
@fehlix 's instructions, I started the service again (sysV). I did not uninstall or reinstall the nordvpn package at all, just restarted service.
I got the apparent error message as the other poster:
Code: Select all
$ sudo service nordvpn restart
[sudo] password for tuaz:
Restarting /usr/sbin/nordvpnd: nordvpnstart-stop-daemon: warning: failed to kill 1892: No such process
But a subsequent
does successfully connect the vpn.
[UPDATE 2]
After reboot, you have to again restart the service otherwise you get the whoops sock message. So
is equivalent to
, which is just a one-off start command.
WHat is the sysV equivalent of
, which enables a service on start up?
Google searches show the command is
but no such command is found in MX21.

Indeed, after restarting twice, it eventually connected.
Code: Select all
$ sudo service nordvpn restart

. ok

That message had no effect on the restart command, in the sense that after I ran the restart command ONCE, the first
after that got nordvpn up and running.
The only issue now I have is getting the service to be enabled all the time on bootup so I don't have to keep starting the service.

OK. It might be just a timing / dbus issue.
Perhaps only a timing issue:
This might fix it by adding a 3 sec delay into start :
Code: Select all
sudo sed -i '/ start)/a\ sleep 3' /etc/init.d/nordvpn

I had a similar problem with 3.12, and following the suggestion of the Nordvpn support, I removed all traces of the non-functioning version 3.12, and installed version 3.10, which works, but is invisible to the MX Linux package installer or Synaptic... ;-(

Actually you could downgrade to a lower version number within Synaptic.
* Quick filter: nordvpn
* Select nordvpn and press Ctrl+E ( Menu: Package -> Force version )
NordVPN-Package-force-version.png
* and select the lower version 3.10
NordVPN-Force-version.png
* After downgrade do lock/pin the version to the one installed:
NordVPN-Lock-version.png
Note: "MX Updater" takes into account the pinned/hold version specified by Synaptic and does not perform an upgrade.
Running "apt full-upgrade" manually on the command line would ignore Synaptic's pinned version and would upgrade.
++EDIT+++
Actually after having upgraded from 3.10 to 3.12
and manually added the mentioned delay this way
booted in either SysVinit or systemd:
First stop it:
Add a delay:
Code: Select all
sudo sed -i '/ start)/a\ sleep 2' /etc/init.d/nordvpn
Note: In systemd it will use the shown SysVInit script (!) through MX Linux used systemd-shim helper.
And start again:
Rebooting into SysVinit or systemd always made nordvpn running.

I added the delay to the init script following all your instructions, then rebooted. I still get the whoops sock error.
I can still restart service to make it work but it doesn't work OOTB upon reboot.

I added the delay to the init script following all the instructions in post #19, then rebooted. I also still get the whoops sock error when using "nordvpn c"
I can still restart service to make it work, which is my new normal way to get it to work.
Just sharing what works and what doesn't work for me, Jim.

@jim8085 ,
@asqwerth thanks for checking the delay hack, which seems only to work for me.
Hmm.. not sure whether we should try to fix NordVPN start-script and it's worth the effort as they probably might soonish provide their own fixed version, anyway. I'd say, let's wait and see whether next NorVPN update provides a fix or not.

Following my yesterday's request, I got this answer this afternoon:
Hello,
Thank you for your response.
And we appreciate you for sharing your feedback.
We wanted to let you know, that our services do not work with sysvinit.
Our NordVPN software works on Linux with systemd only.
If you wish, you can enable systemd by following these steps on the official MX Linux website:

@dolphinoracle maybe we must wait update from this package
I tried the solution of @fehlix delay init script not work for me too, finally I back to nordvpn 3.11

The thing is there are similar comments on the latest nordvpn package version 3.12 (and 3.11) in Arch's AUR.
Read the latest comments here:
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/nordvpn-bin/
whoops sock message and all.
And Arch is systemd.
It would appear that there are some problems with the later versions of Nord, and it's not confined to sysV distros.
My Arch-based distro is currently on 3.11 and it doesn't connect at all, even though there is no error message.

If you can be interested in my other distributions based on arch I have solved by installing wireguard and wireguard tools and even the last release works perfectly there is to say however that adopt the systemd, on mx differently (sysvinit) I never had any problem only with a small expedient script on
~/.local/share/applications/nordvpn.sh I used to start from session and start in mx setting until the last release 3.12
Code: Select all
#!/bin/bash
if [ x"${DESKTOP_SESSION##*/}" = x"lightdm-xsession" ]; then
sleep 10s
nordvpn c &
exit 0
fi
if [ x"${DESKTOP_SESSION##*/}" = x"xfce" ]; then
sleep 10s
nordvpn c &
exit 0
fi

In case manually restarting nordvpn would help, as mentioned already,
here a password less auto(re-)start of nordvpn daemon:
* first enable password less (re-)start of NordVPN daemon:
run this in terminal:
Code: Select all
echo "%users ALL=(root) NOPASSWD: /etc/init.d/nordvpn" | sudo sh -c 'umask 0337; tee /etc/sudoers.d/nordvpn'
* next add an autostart entry for Xfce with delay, e.g. of 5 sec:
Within Session&Startup add new Entry:
Name: NordVPN
Comment: Restart NordVPN
Command:
Code: Select all
sh -c "pidof -q nordvpnd && exit; test -f /etc/init.d/nordvpn && sleep 5 && sudo /etc/init.d/nordvpn restart"
Note: you can add further commands semicolon separated like the one you have shown, e.g.
e.g. to add "nordvpn c"
Code: Select all
sh -c "pidof -q nordvpnd && exit; test -f /etc/init.d/nordvpn && sleep 5 && sudo /etc/init.d/nordvpn restart; nordvpn c"
Works here for both inits: SysVinit and systemd.

May I ask if you just emailed them at their support email? I will file a similar bug report to reinforce yours because version 3.12 doesn't work in Arch either, which uses systemd. It doesn't manifest exactly the same way as there is no error message and it appears to have connected successfully. However, no internet connection gets through at all once you connect. A stop and restart service does not help. I believe though that it must stem from the same bug in 3.12 because the source of the PKGBUILD for the Arch package is the 3.12 .deb file.
And at least in MX running under sysV, it does connect once you restart the service. So the claim that their application doesn't work with sysV just isn't true.

I've been checking my MX18 and 19 installs. Nordvpn 3.11 never had the sysvinit-compat package installed, but it works OOTB anyway. It's nothing to do with that package.
Pinned version 3.11 in those installs for the moment.

@fehlix can the first command be reversed if Nordvpn issues an update that works again? I'll be more comfortable testing this knowing how to reverse it.
For now, I made a launcher that runs a script with the simple sysV command to start the service. Terminal pops up, I enter password, then I run command to connect.
I don't connect with vpn all the time (e.g my wireless printer/scanner doesn't work with vpn on).
[Added] also, is the nordvpn deb file for MX21 the same as that for MX19? I have the 3.11 file in MX21 but had cleared the caches of my MX19 installs already.

to add: The autostart would require to start nordvpn daemon with elevated rights, so using sudo password less is the simplest to achieve this within autostart and without a password prompt.
The line:
Code: Select all
%users ALL=(root) NOPASSWD: /etc/init.d/nordvpn
means all user can start/stop nordvpn deamon,
Surely, this can be "hardened" to only allowing e.g. to start/restart for a specific user,
but would required a further helper script.
This "fix" would only be needed, until NordVPN get fixed somehow by it's own.
Alternative if a GUI password prompt is desired:
Do replace within the autostart entry "sudo" with "pkexec"
So the autostart command line would look like:
Code: Select all
sh -c "pidof -q nordvpnd && exit; test -f /etc/init.d/nordvpn && sleep 5 && pkexec /etc/init.d/nordvpn restart"

Thanks, fehlix.
I'll try it tomorrow. It's late here and I've just sent a bug report to NordVPN support to complain about v3.12 on both MX and Arch. That way they can't claim it's only a sysV problem.
BTW, for anyone interested, this is my .desktop file (launcher) to run a script that only has "sudo service nordvpn start" in it.
Code: Select all
[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Exec=/home/tuaz/.local/share/applications/nordvpn_restart.sh
Icon=ndisgtk
Type=Application
Categories=Network;Plasma;KDE;XFCE;GTK;Settings;DesktopSettings;X-XFCE-SettingsDialog;
OnlyShowIn=XFCE;KDE
Terminal=true
StartupNotify=true
X-XfceHelpPage=preferences
Name[en_US]=Nordvpn_Restart
Name=Nordvpn_Restart
Comment[en_US]=
Comment=restart nord svc
It does require password but since I don't enable VPN all the time, I could live with it the past few days.

I quoted their response to you and said it can't be true since I've had issues with their package running in Arch (systemd) since version 3.11. Gave them a link to the Arch AUR showing many users having issues since 3.11, and said that at least in MX sysV, I could restart service and get it working, which I haven't been able to do in Arch.
Let's see their response to that.

Is there a compelling reason to "upgrade"? Version 3.10 seems to work just fine, although now it is unknown to MX Package manager, because I uploaded it using NordVPN's instructions-- wget... etc.

I've no idea about changes in the different versions.
Would you post the instructions you followed. Esp. I'm interested in this statement "now it is unknown to MX Package", so I like to reproduce by using your instructions.

Your workaround to to make nordvpn service (re)start automatically upon reboot/fresh login does indeed work.
But I was using MX-KDE instead of XFCE, and the Plasma settings for autostart allows you to add only: a) application, b) login script or c) logout script.
so for the autostart entry, I made a .desktop file (ie, an "application") with the Exec entry as:
Code: Select all
Exec=bash -c 'pidof -q nordvpnd && exit; test -f /etc/init.d/nordvpn && sleep 5 && sudo /etc/init.d/nordvpn restart'
I didn't want to autoconnect, since I only connect when I want to.
Note: I actually first reverted your above changes and tried to do what
@galaxysurfer and
@CyberGhost did, ie login via the new
command, but when I used the provided browser link (in the terminal output) to re-login, the browser page simply indicated that I had been logged in, without the short **appearance of a fresh terminal with the nordvpn rotating "/" symbol indicating logging in was happening. When I then tried to connect in a terminal after that so-called login, it told me I wasn't logged in.
I tried this in systemd and sysv, both told me I wasn't logged in after the browser page said I'd logged in successfully.
So I had to log in using the deprecated command, add your workarounds again, and reboot, and sure enough your workaround works to enable the service our of the box. I can then connect whenever I want to without any whoops sock error.
** I used the new login command in my Arch-based distros and when I entered my account name and password in the browser page and hit ENTER, a new terminal appeared during login (with the rotating "/") and disappeared when login was complete. After that, Nordvpn version 3.12 is now working upon connecting, instead of previously when internet was fully cut off upon connecting.
@fehlix , I'm wondering if under "normal" systemd, the browser is able to trigger the opening of a terminal which is not possible in sysvinit or MX's systemd.

AFAIK, it's possible to "talk" from Javascript to dbus, and dbus can trigger waiting/registed dbus services to perform actions and trigger systemd user-sevices, which includes starting of applications or running scrips etc. But surely I have no idea what they do within there new browser based login procedures.

Code: Select all
nordvpn c
Whoops! /run/nordvpn/nordvpnd.sock not found
Workaround as per

$HOME/.config/autostart/NordVPN.desktop
Code: Select all
[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Type=Application
Name=NordVPN
Comment=Restart NordVPN
Exec=sh -c "pidof -q nordvpnd && exit; test -f /etc/init.d/nordvpn && sleep 5 && sudo /etc/init.d/nordvpn restart"

@fehlix
question 1:
are you able with this new version, to logout, and then login with the new command
question2:
In your much earlier post here:
viewtopic.php?p=661237#p661237
you added a 3 sec delay to /etc/init.d/nordvpn:
Code: Select all
sudo sed -i '/ start)/a\ sleep 3' /etc/init.d/nordvpn
Now with
Code: Select all
sh -c "pidof -q nordvpnd && exit; test -f /etc/init.d/nordvpn && sleep 5 && sudo /etc/init.d/nordvpn restart"
there is a further 5 second delay.
So the total delay you are suggesting is 8 secs? (for what it's worth, I reduced the delay in /etc/init.d/nordvpn to 1 sec; I wasn't sure whether I supposed to delete the whole sleep line so I just reduced the number of secs)

In #29 you provided 3 commands
Code: Select all
echo "%users ALL=(root) NOPASSWD: /etc/init.d/nordvpn" | sudo sh -c 'umask 0337; tee /etc/sudoers.d/nordvpn'
sh -c "pidof -q nordvpnd && exit; test -f /etc/init.d/nordvpn && sleep 5 && sudo /etc/init.d/nordvpn restart"
sh -c "pidof -q nordvpnd && exit; test -f /etc/init.d/nordvpn && sleep 5 && sudo /etc/init.d/nordvpn restart; nordvpn c"
What is the difference between #2 and #3?
I can not do this check now, but anyways I need a solution, thx:)

2= just restart service upon login (of MX, not nordvpn!), no auto connecting of vpn [this assumes your account is logged in]
3 = restart service and also auto connect.
You decide which one you want.

@hkjz , the first command is a password less entry auto(re-)start of nordvpn daemon that needs to be run in terminal. Type it in, press enter, and then close terminal. The second command is what you put in the command box in Session&Startup. The third command is the same command as the second, but with the option to auto connect upon login. That's the one I use. To do this, first go to Menu, then Settings, and scroll down until you see Session&Startup. Click on that and when it opens up, click on Application Autostart. There is a little plus icon (+) at the bottom right of the window. Click on that. In the first entry box that says Name, type: NordVPN. In the second box that says Description, type: Restart NordVPN. In the third box that says Command, type in either the second command @fehlix gave in order to restart the service without auto connecting, or use the third command to restart plus auto connect the service. Which command you use is up to you. As @asqwerth already mentioned. Also, reboot your computer after doing all of that. Check to see if it worked.You can type in terminal: nordvpn status. I suggest reading the #28 post @fehlix made about this again.

Just an update that the new standard login command is
nordvpn login --nordaccount
but in MX, when you are subsequently directed to continue your login via their web login portal in your browser and you do your login in said portal as directed, the terminal that's supposed to open (triggered by your login) to complete the login process, never happens.
If that is the case, the fallback command works:
nordvpn login --legacy

Thanks @asqwerth I check to make sure I'm logged in but usually I stay logged in automatically. It always tells me I'm already logged in with the first command you mentioned. I think if a user doesn't manually log out of the application, then they stay logged in. Good to know there is a fallback command though.

Did you read pages 1 to 3 of this thread where the advice was given by fehlix to run
sudo service nordvpn restart
to restart the service after an update of nordvpn? [added] this is where you get the whoops sock error after an update, if you don't restart service.
And then on p3 he gives advice on how to set up an autostart entry so that the service is always restarted on bootup/login?
PS. In Fedora, after an update if I don't restart service (with systemd commands), I also get a whoops sock error. This particular issue is nothing to do with systemd vs sysvinit.

Same problems since last fall. Nord's help wasn't help. The thread is marked "solved", but I didn't grasp the solution.
I do Not have Nord set to auto-connect. I do not run Nord elevated.
After every reboot, starting Nord results in "whoops" error.
My survival cure was (and is) :
After reboot, use MX Package Manager to reinstall NordVPN. (Your settings are preserved.)
Then, >nordvpn login -legacy< and >nordvpn c ____ <
Good to go. I'll make a script for that someday, but for now it only takes a few clicks and keys to do.
- - - - -
This is an easy way to keep doing what you need to do without a fellow noob exploding their brains.
Thanks all.
P.S. I just moved from MX19 to MX21. It's pretty and smooth, but it didn't fix this problem. :)

I'd like to add some info that might help some users.
Since the new update, when trying to connect to nordvpn via the app, it provides a link to the nordvpn site where you have to enter your credentials. However, once logged in, in my case nothing happens (it said that I was 'in' on the webpage, but when typing 'nordvpn c' in terminal, it said I wasn't logged in, go figure).
After contacting the customer service (which was super responsive for once), they told me to type this command 'nordvpn login --legacy' which allowed me to log in.

I already posted that tip in the previous page:

I suspect this is a systemd-dependent thing, because when done in Arch-based distros, the browser login will trigger the opening of a new terminal and text will show that login is completed and you can now go back to connecting to nordvpn the usual way. The new terminal then disappears.

Just something new learned which explains why nordvpn running in MX was not able to complete the new login method (" nordvpn login --nordaccount"), forcing us to use the "--legacy" login instead. It has NOTHING to do with systemd vs sysvinit, but with the lack of xterm preinstalled on MX.
See this post from the AUR page
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/nordvpn-bin
Sensu commented on 2022-04-05 21:41 (UTC)
Please add xterm as a dependency to this. I was not able to sign with my nordvpn credentials until I installed xterm in my system.
I tested this in MX19. xterm was not installed. After installing, I logged out of nordvpn (legacy) and logged in again with the new login method. As previously described, it provides a link which you must open in browser and login from there. This time, with xterm installed, the little terminal does pop open after you enter your account name and password (like I reported happened in Manjaro/Arch-based distros), and after some "working" symbols within, you are logged in, the terminal disappears, and you get a message on the browser page that you are logged in. From there, go back to terminal to connect.
@fehlix @Stevo , request that we add xterm as a dependency to the package or the .pm file in MXPI, or however you all do it.
Thanks.
