Slimbookbattery, slimbookintel and slimbookAMD

#1 Post by MadmanRB »

Okay since my request for these packages didn't work before, I think I will try again.

Slimbookbattery is a GUI frontend to TLP and offers uses a choice on how their power is used on laptops.
This is an app created by the slimbook team for the linux slimbook line of laptops.
But one can use this on normal laptops, I had great successes with them on my newer HP laptop and if you need someone to test them I'm game.
There are other tools created by the team such as slimbookamd and slimbookintel which farther improve battery life.

Now all of these do have precompiled binaries for ubuntu but none seem to work that well with MXlinux and well thats why I am requesting these... again.

TLP alone is okay, but I find slimbooks apps very effective as I can tweak them to my own needs as opposed to just sticking with the default settings.
I did install MX21 on my older laptop which I am planning to experiment with, I may even try this on my newer laptop again.

https://github.com/slimbook/slimbookbattery

there are the githubs, now yes they do have precompiled binaries but none work well with MXlinux.
It will be nice to have these tools, they help my battery loads when i am on Kubuntu

Comments like these are not needed, it’s just dramatic, I said I would work on it and have. Just because your request is in a long line of other requests, testing, and other things does not mean it’s not being worked.

Sorry, that comment isn’t specifically directed at you, it’s more of a general statement to everyone who makes such comments. We do all of this voluntarily in our free time for free and these comments don’t make me at least want to drop everything in my life to do more.

Your request will be fulfilled if possible as soon as possible.

I just spent over an hour messing with these darn packages and I have some bad news, but first some maybe good news...

Can you try this build of slimbookbattery out? (its the newest 4.0.3 version) @mystic you were wanting this too
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1grrBNS ... sp=sharing
your system "may" need booted with systemd and I'm not happy with how they created this application, so if it doesn't work it's probably related to the next thing...

I won't be packaging slimbookintelcontroller or slimbookamdcontroller as they are now. These applications need a lot of work, they are listed as "betas", but that isn't the actual problem.
The problem is that they require downloading of source code and Pip packages during install. This is not proper at all.
I created a GitHub issue here for slimbookintelcontroller https://github.com/slimbook/slimbookint ... r/issues/3 But its the same thing for the AMD version.

I also committed some basic debianization updates for slimbookbattery on GitHub for them, not sure how much more I'm willing to do at this point, they really need to look at how they want to develop these applications. :frown:

Well I gave the package a try for over a week on both my laptops (thus why I have not responded yet) and well slimbook battery does partially work on my newer laptop but works fine with my older.
Unfortunately I had to dump MX linux on the newer laptop after a while, its okay on my older one but it was not getting on with the newer laptop.

I am slowly working with the Slimbook folks on GitHub and hopefully with time all their stuff can be packaged for MX and Debian.

But vendor specific things are not my priority, especially when the applications themselves need work/rework.

I’ll push slimbookbattery to the Test Repo soon though, the other two have to wait awhile as they aren’t ready for showtime.

I mean there is TLPUI in the repos and I have that currently going on my older laptop.
I just liked slimbookbattery a little more as it had a quick settings icon in the toolbar so I didnt have to fiddle around as much.
Both are UI frontends of TLP and for me take most of the guesswork and hassle out of making my battery life better on my lappy's.
For me the less I have to fiddle around with things the better, sure I can simply "just use windows' but even on that theres a lot of fussing about even moreso than most linux flavors.
